MICHAEL WODLINGER

Michael Wodlinger, whose rich and varied life encompassed teaching, academia, pastoral ministry, and art, passed away peacefully on July 28 in Drummondville, Quebec.

Michael was born in England in 1941, the son of Donald and Irene Wodlinger, who met and married there during the Second World War.

Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Chantal Proulx; his three children and their partners, Lisa Wodlinger Sweeney (Dave), Jessica Attwater (Ryan), and Jason Wodlinger (Gabrielle); and his four cherished grandchildren, Henry, Leo, Liam, and Maggie. He is also survived by his sister, Karen Dyck (Jeff) and, his former wives, Susan Wodlinger and Alison Bell as well as many friends and congregants.

Michael loved his family deeply. He prayed for them regularly, asking Elohim, the Creator of the Universe, to bless, guide, and protect them, and, above all, that their hearts would be open to the love of the God of Israel.

Despite the many challenges he faced throughout his educational journey, Michael ultimately became a gifted teacher, academic, pastor, counselor, and artist. His life was marked by a deep commitment to the people and communities around him.

Whether he was working with students, friends, congregants, family members, or those seeking his counsel, Michael gave generously of himself. He had a remarkable ability to make people feel comfortable, heard, secure, and valued. When someone needed him, he made himself available, giving that person his complete and undivided attention and time. In doing so, he brought out the best in many of the people whose lives he touched.

Michael encouraged those around him to make the best of every circumstance, remain lifelong learners, think critically, and explore the world with curiosity and courage. He believed in the importance of community and consistently encouraged people to "carry each other’s burdens”.

In 2003, Michael came to believe in Yeshua as the Messiah through the gentle guidance of Roger McCready and Ben Volman. Shortly thereafter, Michael got involved with Chosen People Ministries Toronto. His faith in Yeshua the Messiah was a source of strength and purpose, and he sought to share the Good News with others through his ministry and his life. His main passion was teaching the Scriptures, both orally and in writing, a precious gift from God.

Michael also discovered a deep and joyful passion for art. He painted and created frequently, enthusiastically, and sometimes rather messily - but always with delight. His art became another way for him to explore the world, express himself, and engage with the beauty and complexity of life.

Michael will be remembered for his generous spirit, his curiosity, his resilience, his commitment to learning and service, and his ability to listen deeply. His gifts and talents made others feel seen and cared for. Above all, he will be remembered for his love - for his family, for the many people whose lives he touched, and for his faith in Adonai.

Despite early struggles as a student, Michael graduated with a BA from Laurentian University (Sudbury, ON) in 1972, and a PhD in Education Administration from the University of Alberta in 1980. In 2008 he earned a Master of Theological Studies from Tyndale Seminary (Toronto, ON). He was designated as a Certified Spiritual Director by the Canadian Council of Professional Certification, and named a Paul Harris Fellow for his contributions through The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

A memorial service and a celebration of Michael’s life will be held at Chapel Ridge Funeral Home, 8911 Woodbine Ave, Markham, ON.
