MONICA FURER
Our lovely wife, mother and sister died August 1, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones, following a short but intense cancer illness. Monica was the love of our lives, beautiful and gracious, brilliant and humble. She will be missed by her husband Paul Daeninck, her son Christopher, daughter Michelle (Stirling), sister Trish (Hal; Matthew and Sarah), in-laws Tom (Karen; Felicia and Cami), Liz (Lauren and Morgan), Anne (Rob; Declan) and Stephen (Kath), many nieces and nephews, and extended family throughout Canada and Switzerland.
Monica was born in Toronto and spent her formative years in Montreal. She loved her time at Trafalgar School and Marianopolis College but was excited to move to Winnipeg with her family in 1981. She enrolled at the University of Manitoba where she made many long-term friends. People always gravitated to Monica: her warmth and her genuine interest and caring for others made her such a wonderful person to be around. She met Paul during her medical studies and the two were married in 1989, the year after she completed her medical degree. She followed this with a neurosurgery residency at the University of Manitoba, certifying in 1997. She made the decision not to practice but rather focus on learning American Sign Language after learning her son Christopher was deaf. She graduated as an ASL-English Interpreter in 2005 and has been working with the Deaf community since. She had such satisfaction facilitating communication during her 21 years as an interpreter. She was also an active volunteer and found much pleasure in reading, gardening, music, theatre, travelling with Paul and family, and spending time with her cherished group of friends.
Monica’s greatest joy, however, came from her children and her family. She was so proud of Christopher and Michelle, and she adored watching them grow into the amazing adults they are today. Monica achieved that perfect balance of always being available to her children while also fostering independence and fully respecting their choices and decisions. She was a devoted daughter to her parents throughout their lives and was especially generous in caring for them during their times of illness. Her sister will be ever grateful to have had the privilege of sharing such a close relationship with Monica throughout their childhood and as adults. We benefitted so much from Monica’s capacity to love and cherish those around her. We all loved her so much and she will be terribly missed.
Monica requested no funeral service, and we are planning a celebration of her life for a later date. We are grateful for all the words of support received; those who wish to do so may donate in her name to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation or the Winnipeg Humane Society.
