It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Verla Iona Verrier at Riverview Health Centre August 3, 2026 at 94 years of age.
She leaves to mourn her sister Verna Esslemont; nieces, Cory Esslemont (Clay) and Teri Ann Murphy (Michael); nephews, Cam (Gerri) and Eric Esslemont and Murray Cameron (Susan); her stepsons, Randy Verrier (Darlene Kolody) and Ed Verrier; as well as numerous great-nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, Allen and Mary Cameron, her brother Norval (Gwen), brother-in-law Roy Esslemont, first husband Gerry Mitchell and second husband, Rene Verrier.
Verla was born in Boissevain, MB. She graduated as an RN at St. Boniface Hospital in 1953, working at Boissevain and Killarney Hospitals. She became a Public Health Nurse in 1957, working in Brandon, Portage la Prairie, Selkirk, and then Winnipeg until her retirement in 1997.
In 1957 Verla befriended Verna and Murray McRorie and was welcomed into Verna's large family, becoming honorary auntie to her children, Rhonda, Marla, Todd and Twylla, with friendships lasting into her 90s. When she moved to Selkirk, she was welcomed by Verna's sister, Irene, and became a close friend and part of her family until her death.
Verla lived a full life, enjoying the work she loved. She remained close to her nursing sisters whom she treasured as well as the many friends she met throughout her journey. She was a kind, caring person, and loved by all who knew her. She loved nature and camping in their mobile home. Their cottage at Lee River was a favorite spot for sledding, boating and entertaining.
She had several hobbies in her retirement, including knitting. She knitted blankets for the Humane Society and Prayer Shawls for the St Anthony Padua Church. She attended the North Kildonan United Church.
We want to thank Darlene Kolody, Janice Chezick and the McRorie and Bell families for their kindness and support over the years; and a special thank you to Linda Paluck for her friendship and ongoing dedication to Verla.
The family would like to thank the staff at River Ridge I and River Ridge II, the staff at Health Sciences Women's Hospital, and Riverview Health Centre who took such good care of Verla during the time she was with them. Special thanks to Dr. Dean and her staff for their kindness and support over many years.
Cremation has take place and a private family interment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Cancer Care Manitoba or the Humane Society.
