STEVEN HENRY SPRY

Forever loved, forever missed. Happy heavenly 54th birthday Steve - August 14, 1972.

Steven passed away at the age of 53. He was deeply adored and admired. Steven had always cherished his family above all else. A loving and devoted husband to Shelley for 23 years, Steven was a proud, supportive, and endlessly caring dad to Logan, Jackson, and the family pug, Betty. He is survived by his loving parents, Chester and Sharon; his younger brother Shawn (Kristy) and their children, Joshua, Janessa, Jacob and Eli; extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. The family also extends heartfelt thanks to Brent Timmerman, Steven’s best friend for over 20 years - and to Trish Timmerman and family for their enduring friendship with our family.

Born in Ontario, Steven always considered Manitoulin Island home. Throughout his childhood and early teen years, he and his family moved between Ontario and the North, living in Frobisher Bay/Iqaluit and Yellowknife and spending summers on Manitoulin Island. After graduating high school in Yellowknife, Steven attended Sault College, earning a diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology. Driven to go further, he continued his studies at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, where he completed his Bachelor of Engineering degree and obtained his P.Eng designation. In 2009, he added the PMP certification to his achievements.

After university, Steven returned to Yellowknife to work with consulting firms before moving to Winnipeg in 1999 to join StandardAero as a Facility Engineer. Over the years, he took on many roles there, eventually becoming a Director. He was never afraid of new challenges. Steven later pursued public service, beginning at Manitoba Housing as Director, then Chief Operating Officer, and ultimately Chief Executive Officer. His desire to make a meaningful difference led him to further roles within the Manitoba government, including Assistant Deputy Minister in a few departments. For a short period, he also acted as Fire Commissioner, which he was very proud of.

Steven found enjoyment in simple, meaningful moments – working in his yard, gardening, chatting with neighbours, reading, travelling, and whenever possible, hunting and fishing. He loved cooking special meals and welcoming family and friends for games, movies or craft nights. Steven and Shelley treasured their time together, whether at concerts, plays, markets, or simply out for ice cream or tea. Steven’s personality was large and unforgettable – loyal, kind, passionate, generous, and absolutely genuine. He had an unforgettable sense of humor and laugh; his dimples would make you smile.

He will be forever loved and missed by his family. Not a day goes by without thoughts of him and the imprint he left on our hearts.
