It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Elizabeth White, at the age of 96, on August 5, 2026.
Elizabeth was born in Banatski Brestovac, Yugoslavia (now part of Serbia), to Peter and Barbara Karch, and was the last surviving of seven siblings.
Near the end of the Second World War, Mom and her German family were imprisoned in a labour camp under brutal conditions. She eventually escaped and made her way to Austria and then London, England, where she taught herself English and completed nursing school. She immigrated to Canada in 1957 and settled in Winnipeg, where she raised her three daughters and worked as a labour and delivery nurse at Victoria General Hospital.
Mom was a talented artist, avid gardener and lifelong learner. Above all, she loved her family. Her kindness, gentle nature, strength and resilience remained throughout her life.
Elizabeth is survived by her daughters, Tanya White (Tom), Leah Restall (Ian) and Melanie Fenton (Bill); grandchildren, Alex Bogucki (Kaitlyn), Natasha Martel (Kjellby), John Kubicek (Michalle), Mitch Kubicek, Owen and Maddy Fenton; six great-grandchildren; niece, Linda Birmingham; and extended family.
A private celebration of Mom’s life will be held with family.
Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the staff at the Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre and Mom’s companion caregiver, Susan, for their exceptional care, compassion and kindness.
Mom lived an extraordinary life, marked by hardship and resilience, but above all, by love. We will miss her deeply and carry her with us always.
