EDWARD TOEWS
Unexpectedly, yet peacefully, on August 9, 2026, Edward (Ed) John Toews of Winnipeg, MB, passed away at the age of 75, with his family by his side.
He was predeceased by his parents, Abram and Anne Toews, and his siblings, Annie and Bernie.
Ed will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Shirley; his children, Amanda (Matthew), Colin (Jessica), and Breanne (Bradley); his grandchildren, Oscar, Annie, Luke, and Lincoln; his siblings, Delores, Garry, and Irene; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, his beloved dog Roscoe, and many, many good friends.
Ed was born in Altona, Manitoba, and later moved to Winnipeg, where he lived on Victor Street. He married Shirley in November 1973, and together they welcomed their three children while living on Waller Street. Ed loved the mountains, and for a couple of years he moved his family out to BC before they all made their way back to Winnipeg, eventually settling in Charleswood.
Ed was a career painter and decorator, trained by his father, and he spent 55 years in the trade. With so much compassion in his heart, he later went on to work at Chapel Lawn for a number of years - and, true to form, he spent his last 20 years perpetually "retiring" from painting. He was inducted into the Charleswood Rotary Club in April 1999, where he proudly served and was honoured with the Paul Harris Fellow Award. A passionate classic car enthusiast, Ed loved his 1971 GTO - until he tracked down the 1954 Fargo his father had owned back in Ed's youth. He was a loyal Winnipeg Blue Bombers fan and season ticket holder since the old stadium, and he especially loved taking friends and family along to the games. Ed was a faithful Christian and a member of Grant Memorial Church. His greatest joy was simply being Grandpa.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home & Cemetery, 4000 Portage Avenue, on August 20, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. Central Time.
A special thank you to all the staff at Health Science Centre Adult Emergency for their exceptional care and compassion, and for accommodating the whole family as they gathered to be with Ed in his final hours.
If friends so desire, donations in memory of Ed may be made to the Charleswood Rotary Club Foundation (RCCCF Inc.). Donations can be made by cheque, payable to "RCCCF INC", or by e-transfer to rcccfinc@outlook.com.
In keeping with Ed's fan loyalty, the family invites everyone to wear their Blue Bombers gear to the Celebration of Life.
