IRENEUSZ (IREK) MIKULEC

Ireneusz (Irek) Mikulec passed away July 14, 2026, with his loving wife, Aldona, and son, Philip, by his side.

Born and raised in Poland, Irek and Aldona were married in 1980. Soon after, they escaped communist Poland and with their newborn son, Maciej, immigrated to Winnipeg in 1982, where they were later joined by Philip.

Through determination and a relentless work ethic, Irek became the quintessential provider for his family. Maciej and Philip fondly remember Irek's strong personality and the countless, legendary stories of him dispensing street justice from his Winnipeg transit driver’s seat where he dealt with matters in his creative old-school way.

Irek’s deep love for his family was his defining legacy. He broke the cycles of his own past by providing his boys and grandchildren with full acceptance, and unwavering support. He was there for them any time, any place, at whatever cost.

The strongest bond Irek formed was with Aldona. They loved each other unconditionally, and always found a way to overcome challenges, together.

Irek beat stage 4 cancer twice 10 years ago. The heavy treatments saved his life then, but caused a change to life's pace. Irek and Aldona adapted together, as they always had, and maintained their strong bond. When Irek fell ill for the final time, Aldona's loving presence at his hospital bedside provided his ultimate comfort.

Irek leaves behind his beloved wife, Aldona; his sons, Maciej (Rikke) and Philip (Andrea); and his grandchildren, Kasbien and Viggo. Nothing was more important to him than family, and that legacy lives on.

In keeping with Irek’s wishes, he was cremated and no formal funeral service will be held. His family encourages those who knew him to raise a glass in his honour - na zdrowie.
