JAMES (JIM) DAVID EMMONDS

January 22, 1932 – August 12, 2026

James (Jim) David Emmonds passed on August 12, 2026, at the age of 94 after a life well lived.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Brenda; son Garth (daughters, Madeline and Lily); daughter Lisa (Mark); and niece Cheryl in Wisconsin and her family. Jim will also be missed by sisters-in-law, Lauren (Ed), Alix (Jeff), Caleen and their families. Jim was predeceased by his parents, David and Sarah; sister Violet; and Cheryl’s husband Bob.

Jim was adopted at an early age by the Emmonds (David and Sarah). Jim attended Isbister, Victoria Albert, Hugh John, General Wolfe and Daniel McIntyre schools, leaving formal schooling in grade 10 to begin his working career. Working for the Winnipeg Tribune, Eaton’s, The Bay, Duffy’s Taxi, Royal Canadian Shows, Winnipeg Free Press, Rothman Tobacco, Simon Cigars, Park & Tilford Distillery, Sail Tobacco and Molson Brewery gave Jim many fond memories which he loved to share. After working for others Jim decided to go into business for himself. The Charleswood Hotel with partners, the St Norbert Hotel on his own, Arthur’s Restaurant, again with partners and then Jimmy D’s Shoe Shine and Baggage Checking at the airport with his son Garth. Jim ended his working career with James D. Motors after which he finally retired.

Jim also had many stories from his time with the St. James Rams Football Club, Winnipeg Kinsmen Club, Winnipeg Club Oldtimers hockey, Khartum Shrine and the Motor Patrol. Jim enjoyed spending time at the Grand Beach cabin and on numerous fishing trips.

Jim took friends very seriously and would go out of his way to help anyone whenever he could. His sense of humour will be greatly missed.

At Jim’s request there will be no formal service.

As I look back, I would not change a thing. It was all an experience, both good and bad, and that is life. So, to the friends I outlived, I join you. And to the ones I didn’t, have a cold one for me.

See you soon. - Jim

  • Brenda, Garth, Lisa and family, I was very saddened to hear of Jim's passing. I have many fond memories of Jim from my childhood and later in life. He was always someone who made an impression, and I will remember him with a smile. While it is difficult to say goodbye, the memories he leaves behind and the impact he had on so many people will remain. Please know that I am thinking of all of you during this difficult time. May you find comfort in the many wonderful memories you shared with Jim and in the support of family and friends who care about you. I'm sure he and my dad are already having a cold one up there. With sincere sympathy. - Posted by: Cam Moskal (Family friend) on: Aug 22, 2026
