EDITH ANNIE GERRIE

(nee GREEN)

December 15, 1924 - August 16, 2026

After a long and remarkable life, Edie passed away to be lovingly remembered by her family and many friends.

She is survived by daughter Barbara (Denis Precourt), son Bill, daughter Roslyn (Alex Stewart), grandchildren, Elizabeth Stewart and Max Stewart (Brooke Allard) and great-granddaughter Liv Stewart. She was predeceased by her husband Don in 1992.

Born and raised in Napinka, Manitoba, Miss Green always found a way to make things happen. After graduating from Deloraine High School, Edie attended Success Business College in Winnipeg but by her own admission had no patience for typing and shorthand. She was, however very proficient in competitive tennis. Edie then graduated from the St. Boniface Hospital School of Nursing as an RN, “Class of ‘49” as she would proudly proclaim. There she made life long friends who remained very dear to her.

One of her first patients while in training was a good looking guy named Don Gerrie. Three years later upon her graduation, they married and were true partners until Don’s passing. Don’s youngest teenage brother George came to live with them shortly after their wedding and became the eldest of “the kids”. Edie and Don opened their home on Baltimore Road to relatives, friends and their children’s friends. Edie set an elegant and festive holiday table as well as making late-night eggs for hungry teenagers. Don and Edie encouraged people of all ages to advance their education as the key to life.

After her youngest daughter started school, a restless Edie decided to write her insurance exams. A block from their home she opened Baltimore Insurance in the front office of Don’s real estate business.

She was one of a handful of female insurance agency owners in a male dominated profession. Her determination, intelligence and personality carried the day. When Autopac auto insurance products were introduced to Manitobans in the early 1970s she secured an MPI licence for her agency. She held her Broker licence until retirement at age 73.

Edie loved spending winters at their condo in Port Richey, Florida. She was able to travel there well into her 90s where she revelled in the sunshine and the interesting people she met. She also travelled the world extensively with Don or her childhood friend, Nina Suche. She had many travel adventures with her Aunt Madeline as they were close in age. Cruising the high seas was a special joy to her.

She had great affection for her only sibling Murray Green and his wife Elsie of Napinka. She often spoke fondly of all her cousins, nieces and nephews. She was very proud of the accomplishments of her two grandchildren, Liz and Max.

Edie was a friendly and self confident lady who thought just slightly out of the box. She enjoyed talking with her friend Lillian Taylor on the many projects they both had on the go. Edie loved live jazz music and spent Saturday afternoons with a group of like-minded jazz fans at the Silver Heights Lounge or Assiniboine Park summer concerts.

She took satisfaction in being a sounding board and dispensed valuable advice when asked. She had common sense and an open table. She enjoyed life and her independence to the end.

The family sincerely thanks the medical professionals at St Boniface and Victoria Hospitals and the home care nurses for their kind and compassionate care of our mother.

A private burial at the Napinka Cemetery will take place.
