RICHARD FREDRIC GRUENER

May 11, 1940 - August 12, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Richard.

Richard was predeceased by his wife Sharon (Welch); his parents, Otto and Ida; and his sisters, Irene (Swallow) and Mildred (Hildebrand). He will be deeply missed by his sons, Ryan (Debbie), and Reagan (Leigh); and his beloved grandchildren, Torin, Keefe, Karst and Kinsey. Richard is lovingly remembered by his wife Louise Remillard and her family, Paul (Brooke), Kate (Jordan), Alex Bouchard, Robert (Louise Gauthier) Pascale, Christian Bouchard, Charles (Jenn) Genevieve, Benjamin Bouchard. He leaves to mourn his sisters, Lorraine (Manty), and Marie (Doell); brother Don (Anita); as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Richard enjoyed a career in education for 36 years, 26 years at Chief Peguis Junior High. He was known to be conscientious in his work ethic and consistently fair in his approach to students, always willing to offer a second chance for them to succeed.

Many treasured memories were made at the family cottage at Star Lake. He found joy in curling, golfing, gardening, cooking and travelling to Palm Springs as well as the occasional side trip to play the slots. A lifelong passion for Richard was sports in any capacity, whether it be participating, coaching, cheering his sons and grandkids in their endeavours or his daily joy in reading the sports section and watching sports on TV.

Richard will be remembered for his empathy and his kind heart as evidenced by the abundant friendships he developed.

The family would like to thank the incredible nurses at Health Sciences Centre (SICU) for their compassion and care.

A private family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Rest in Peace Richard. You will be forever loved and in my heart - Louise.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I had the opportunity of having Richard (Mr. Gruener) as a teacher at what I believe was his first school (Springfield Heights). He was well respected for being firm but fair and well liked by students. We would always bump into each other at hockey arenas and it was always nice to chat. A few years ago we went to dinner and a Jets game. It was an enjoyable night. My sympathies to Ryan and Reagan and your families. He always spoke highly of you and he was proud of both of you. You had a great father and role model. - Posted by: John Conrad (Student) on: Sep 05, 2026
