JANICE HELEN LOUISE CAVERS

(nee BARR)

March 29, 1939 - August 25, 2026

Our mum was born on March 29, 1939, and named Janice Helen Barr; with Louise mischievously inserted by her father, Louis on his way to register the birth. That was the beginning of a joyful life, filled with family, friends and fun.

Jan was predeceased by the love of her life Merv Cavers with whom she shared a loving and everlasting marriage, and together they raised their two daughters, Sharon and Valerie (Allan Macgillvray), grandchildren Madrin (Mielen) and Francis. Jan was predeceased by her two brothers Gordon and Bruce.

Jan made friends wherever she went, and she maintained long and enriching friendships from primary school forever onwards. She remained friends with her Normal School group for more than 60 years, and her many close friends include past neighbours and co-workers.

Jan taught school briefly, before having her own kids. She taught early years, which perfectly suited her sense of fun, and we can imagine it triggered her inherent playfulness. She could be goofy and she knew and loved many silly songs and rhymes by heart. She entertained my sister and I with her silliness, and although sometimes it was tiring, and even mortifying, deep down we loved it. Jan went to work at the brand new Hudson’s Bay store at St Vital Centre. She had her own car, and a new job, and she blossomed into a new person. She was an active golfer with the Windsor Park Ladies Golf Club, and a walker enjoying the company of other Prairie Pathfinders. She revisited teaching as a volunteer in English language classes for newcomers to Canada, a role she loved and that led to new friendships. Her and Merv enjoyed many travels together, she loved exploring and experiencing new things.

In perhaps her best role as Gramma Jan, she was up for anything and she was thrilled to have another go with her silly bones! She had endless patience and honed video gaming skills that entertained her grandchildren. Jan was a master knitter and sewer; creating beautiful things for her grandkids, tiny works of art.

Friends played a very important role in Jan’s life; she valued her friends as family. Your closeness and warmth for mum let us know how special she was to you, too. Mum is grateful for the kind and caring people she met at Oakview Place.

Our family was enriched by Jan’s love for us and the joy she had for life.
