ROBERT (BOB) GLEN DOWNS

December 1, 1946 - August 26, 2026

Bob Downs, beloved husband of Linda, passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the age of 79 years, due to complications related to dementia.

Born in Yorkton, SK, Bob was predeceased by his parents, Delbert and Edna; along with his siblings, Arnold (Norma) and Gary (Audrey). He will be remembered with love by his children, Donna, Terry, Ryan (Julie), and Chris (Melissa); along with seven grandchildren (and three grand-dogs), all of whom he was very proud and supportive of.

Bob was most known for his work ethic, having gone more than fifty years without taking a sick day, his sense of humour, and his fondness for making people smile and laugh. He will be missed by all those he worked and socialized with over the many years in Winnipeg and Calgary before retiring in 2016. Known for always being the first to arrive—whether at the Winnipeg Squash Club or at work—he prided himself on keeping abreast of the comings and goings and always being “in the know” wherever he was.

Over the years, Bob spoke fondly of his time working with mentors William Glesby, Donald Bell, Sandy Shindleman, and Robert Shindleman. They motivated Bob to always look for ways to improve, inspire, and produce in whatever role he held within their organizations. There was always “one more deal” Bob was looking to achieve.

Bob and Linda spent much of their social time on the golf course, and whether it was at Southwood G&C in Winnipeg or Sunland Springs in Mesa, Bob freely acknowledged that he was not the golfer of the family!

The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff on the third and seventh floors of Calgary Foothills Hospital, along with Dr. Bakare, for their care and kindness during Bob’s last days.

If friends so desire, donations in lieu of flowers or in Bob’s memory may be made to Central Okanagan Search and Rescue, www.cosar.ca. This volunteer organization is based in Kelowna and supported by his daughter, Terry, and grand-dog, Barrett.

Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Bob’s family at www.MHFH.com.

In living memory of Robert (Bob) Downs, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • My condolences to Bob's wife and their children and families. I first met Bob at Gordon Bell High School in Winnipeg, in the early 1960's. As we got to know each other we found that we, along with another of his friends (Ron K.), shared an interest in a possible career in Chartered Accountancy. To that end, we three attended C.A. introductory seminars at the U of M. Bob would drive us. Bob was the only one of us to follow through. While still in High School Bob, a really nice person, funny, and always energetic, was looking for an after-school source of income. I had one, at a "Solo" store on Colony Street, and was able to persuade the owners (Morris, Izzy, and Dave Silver, great employers all) that Bob would be a great addition. They got it right, and hired him! He really enjoyed working there. As normally happens, peoples' paths separate. We would bump into one another at the odd Jets/01 game in the old arena, probably in the early 1970's. With the help of Shindico staff in Winnipeg and Calgary, I was able to contact Bob about 18 months ago. What a time we had, reminiscing about times 60 years ago, and updating to the current days. Goodbye Bob. It was nice knowing you! Jim Carrigan. - Posted by: Jim Carrigan (High School Friend) on: Sep 15, 2026

  • Ted and I send our condolences to Linda. I remember our times playing badminton and socializing together before Bob and Linda retired to Mesa. We were saddened to hear of his passing.
