MIRIAM ANN BROWNE

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Miriam Ann Browne in Winnipeg on August 31 2026.

She was the daughter of the late Don and Rachel Browne. For 18 years, Miriam was Executive Director and Registrar of what became the MB College of Social Workers. Her work left an indelible mark on the profession. For many years she served on the Law Society of MB, and in 2025, she joined the U of M Faculty of Social Work.

Miriam lived life on her own terms with incredible grace, humor and dignity right to the end. She was diagnosed with glioblastoma last year and we are very grateful for the outstanding care at the Grace Hospice.

She is lovingly remembered by her sisters, Annette Browne (John) and Ruth Asper (David), and Daniel (Sonia), Rebecca (Chris) and Max Asper. May Miriam's memory be a blessing.

Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • I had the absolute PRIVILEGE of knowing Miriam for just over 15 years. I looked forward to our visits because I knew that within five minutes of seeing her, I was guaranteed to have a smile on my face. Her quick wit and ability to make you feel like you were someone special were traits that were effortless for her. For someone so intelligent, she was just as kind and knew how to listen. Miriam, thank you for coming into my life and being an inspiration to continue to work hard, but also reminding me to enjoy life the way you did. I feel so lucky to have met you, and will miss you as so many others will too. -Meghan Black - Posted by: Meghan Black (Friend) on: Oct 01, 2026

  • Miriam was part of our family for many years during which all of us have lots of great memories. These include the many fun & chaotic McElrea gatherings, years spent together at War Eagle Lake enjoying many laughs, shenanigans, dancing, sharing good meals and good wine. Mir was intelligent, quick to laugh and had a keen sense of humour which made her so fun to be around. Yes, her laugh was indeed infectious! She had great style and an eye for design. She loved her dogs, her horses, sports, travel and the beauty of nature including her bird friends. Mir was a wise listener and always had sage advice when asked. She could talk to anyone about anything. Gone far too soon Mir’s passing has left a huge void for her family and friends and she will be sorely missed. “Rest easy Mir-we will always remember you. “ - Posted by: Kathy& Gerry Gibbings (McElrea) (Friend) on: Sep 16, 2026

  • The passing of my high school friend Miriam brings back so many wonderful memories of a special time in our lives. Miriam was kind, funny, mature beyond her years, and truly a friend to everyone. I’ll always remember the great times we shared with our close group of friends—gathering together, drinking tea, talking for hours, and listening to the latest and greatest LPs of the day. Those simple moments became memories that have stayed with me for decades, and I feel fortunate to have shared them with Miriam. She was one of those rare people who made everyone around her feel welcome, and she will be deeply missed. Rest in peace, Miriam—you will always be remembered with a smile. ❤️ - Posted by: Michael Harris (Friend) on: Sep 15, 2026

  • It is with great sadness that I learned this morning of Mir's passing. I knew her for a time, and always remember her fondly. When I think of Mir, I think of her brilliant mind and wit. • I first met Miriam almost 20 years when I became a board member of the Manitoba Institute of Social Work. Miriam was a role model to me in professionalism of advocacy of the Social Work profession, and being a leader in her community. It is through her hard work, dedication, and strong spirit, we now have the Manitoba College of Social Work. Her presence will be missed, but also will continue with all who had the privilege of working and knowing her. - Posted by: Denise Logeot (Former Social Work Board Member) on: Sep 11, 2026

  • I met Miriam when a colleague & I were doing research on domestic violence programs in Manitoba Justice. She was a probation officer and was very helpful with us in our research. Afterwards, Miriam asked if I would supervise her MSW which I was very pleased to do. She was an excellent student, full of good ideas, got her work in on time and overall a pleasure to work with. Later she was a regular guest speaker in a course in Criminal Justice social work I taught with a colleague, and participated in our annual event wherein students made presentations to outside professionals. She was always fair-minded in her assessments of these presentations. We stayed in touch during her work with the College of Social workers, and I was pleased to hear the Faculty (from which I was retired) had hired her. Miriam's passing is a major loss obviously to her family & friends, but also to the profession of Social Work in Manitoba. Rest in Peace. - Posted by: Denis Bracken (Colleague) on: Sep 09, 2026

  • Miriam was a warm, dynamic and insightful person who did a great deal to advance social work and social justice in Manitoba. She contributed significantly to the Faculty of Social Work at UM even before she came to work for us in 2025. During my term as Dean, I appreciated her good counsel and open door as she oversaw the transition of MASW/MIRSW to the professional College. She also volunteered for many years as a supportive adjudicator of student presentations in our Social Work and Criminal Justice course. - Posted by: Jim Mulvale (Colleague) on: Sep 09, 2026

  • We first met Miriam through my sister in law. She gradually became a good friend to us as well. We spent time together during the winters in Palm Springs and more recently at our cottage in Sandy Hook. Miriam was always a joy to be around. She was a kind and caring person We will miss her. - Posted by: Cindy and Mike Lewkiw (Friends) on: Sep 06, 2026

  • I'm so sad to hear of Miriam's passing! I worked with her years and years ago at Manitoba Theatre for Young People. She was an absolutely delightful person. We didn't manage to stay in touch but just the other day i found myself thinking I should look her up. I'm so sorry I didn't do it right away. She was such fun and I'll remember her fondly. - Posted by: Ellen Peterson (friend) on: Sep 05, 2026
