FREDERICK JOSEPH GUNKEL

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Frederick Joseph Gunkel (Fritz) beloved son, brother, devoted husband and father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle.

Fred passed in the home he built for his wife Rosina and their family, during the morning on September 6, 2026, after being lovingly cared for by his family.

Fred was born October 16, 1936 in Bornhagen, Germany to parents, Fritz and Agnes Gunkel.

His family endured many hardships during the Second World War. The brutality of these times shaped and solidified a strong sense of family. They fled the family farm in the night when they had overheard plans that the family was to be picked up. They stayed in a Lager for displaced people after the war.

He will be remembered for his big heart and sense of humour. And missed deeply by those who loved him.

Frederick leaves behind to mourn him, sons, Frederick, Anthony, John, daughter MaryAnn and husband Chris, seven grandchildren along with seven great-grandchildren, sister Margaret Di Frangia, sister in-law Clara Wuebbolt, brother in-law Otto Ament, brother in-law Jürgen Knudson (Birgit) and many nieces, nephews and friends.

A private family service will be held at Glen Eden Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the #81 Legion roof fund "in honour of Frederick Gunkel" to treas81@shaw.ca or to a charity of choice.

Heartfelt thanks to everyone who cared for Frederick, especially Dr. T. Ajayi and staff, Dr. A. Matteliano and staff, Dr. Chowdry and staff at CancerCare. Also to Sukh and Preet as part of home care.

Thank you also to Richard Rosin and associates who were entrusted with Frederick’s care on his final journey.

The world has lost a wonderful soul and is the less for his absence.

Ruhe in Frieden. auf Wiedersehen.
