With much regret, the family of Olivia (Tass) Sutherland (nee Tassie) announces the quiet passing of their mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on Sunday August 30, 2026.
In her final days and hours, she was in constant touch and care of her daughter and son, with precious final visits with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
“Tass” was predeceased by her loving husband John (Jack) Sutherland and her sister Charlotte Tassie.
Mourning her passing are her daughter Heather (Craig) Brown and their sons, Christopher, Lindsay and Scott (Carrie), her son Paul (Eileen) Sutherland and their children, Jess (Jody) and Leah (Mike), her son Grant (Maureen) Sutherland and their sons, Mark and Neil and her son John Sutherland. Also, very much mourning Grandma Tass’s passing are her great-grandchildren, Tyler, Taylor and Jacob Brown, Norah and Willow Sutherland, Lilly, Benny and Clara Galenda.
To describe Tass as a compassionate and ever-loving parent would not be enough. She WAS the family matriarch, supporting and influencing everyone in her sphere. Her inner strength and forceful nature are mentioned by her children in every single-family story. She was the boss and everyone knew it. There was a very tender nature to Tass as well. There were always animals (cats) in her home, which she loved as much as anything.
Tass was an avid volunteer at many of her beloved Riverview area institutions, such as the local community centre, her childrens’ schools and finally at the Riverview Health Centre, where she spent her final days as a resident. Tass was practically a lifelong resident of the South Osborne area, starting out with Jack, on Beresford Avenue and then living in her home on Barlett Avenue from her early 20s to her early 90s!
Once her children were settled into their school years Tass began working out of the home at the downtown Eaton’s store. There she was a much respected and loved colleague.
In the midst of running a busy household and attending all her children’s and grandchildren’s’ sporting events, Tass and Jack found time to travel the world with several trips throughout North America, Europe and Hawaii. In the middle of all this she took up serious jogging, winning medals in the Manitoba Marathon for her age class.
When not attending to family interests, Tass took pleasure in being a regular attendee at the Winnipeg Symphony, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Goldeyes games.
The most joyous time in Tass’s world centered around Christmas time and family dinners, either at home or out at her favourite restaurants. Her Sunday roast beef dinners were legendary, especially accompanied by your choice of desserts, including the world class buttertarts.
The life of this woman was “full”, from every aspect. Her unconditional love and support of every kind was the building blocks of the wonderful family she leaves behind as her legacy. An accomplishment she would have been most proud of.
Mom, rest in peace - job well done.
A private family farewell will take place at the Chapel Lawn Cemetery.

So very sorry to hear of Tass's passing. We spent seven years volunteering together in the Gift Shop at Riverview Health. She was very kind to the many patrons. Many residents would just come to have a little visit with Tass and experience sunshine. After our shift, we enjoyed staying for supper together in the dining room. That was a weekly highlight.
