ANDREW SKLAVENITIS
We are heartbroken to announce the peaceful passing of Andrew Sklavenitis at Riverview Health Centre on September 22, 2026 at the age of 91.
Andrew was born in the town of Vathi on the island of Meganisi (Lefkada), Greece, youngest son to Demetrios and Evangelia.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Georgia, brother Vissarion and many family members in Canada, the US, Australia and Greece. Left to cherish his memory are daughters, Angie (Mike) and Olga (Santiago) and his adoring grandchildren, Alexander, Stephanie and Andreas.
Andrew lost his father at the tender age of three, and shortly afterwards Greece entered into the Second World War. The war years were especially difficult for his family, as they were for many during that time.
After serving in the Greek Navy, Andrew sailed the world on merchant ships and in 1961 he settled in Winnipeg, where he had family.
Andrew became a successful hair stylist and business owner, first in the 1970s at the Mona Lisa in downtown Winnipeg, then at Andrew’s Hair Salon in St. James for over 20 years, where many customers became lifelong friends. In addition to running a business and raising a family, Andrew was also a proud member of the Order of AHEPA, serving as chapter president and coordinator for the Greek Islands Pavilion.
When Georgia fell ill, Andrew spent many years taking care of her, ensuring all her needs were met. As was his way, he became a popular visitor at the Taché Centre.
Andrew also went to night school to earn his High School Equivalency and in his 70s found his passion in ballroom dancing, which he did for many years.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents of The Venvi Portsmouth Retirement Residence for their kindness, care and companionship, which made his year there a happy and memorable one. Additionally, we would like to thank his team at CancerCare Manitoba, Palliative Care, as well as the staff at Riverview Health Centre for their exceptional care of Andrew during his final weeks.
Our heartfelt appreciation to his Home Care workers over the years. Your compassion and exceptional care of Andrew did not go unnoticed.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Ave., with Father Nik Tambakis officiating. Interment will take place immediately following the service at Waverly Memorial Gardens. The family invites you to a luncheon after the interment at the Manitoba Hellenic Cultural Centre (MHCC), 2255 Grant Ave.
Always well dressed, with perfect hair, a big smile, a little chuckle, a great conversationalist, a generous and loving father, brother, uncle and grandfather, a life well lived. We love you Dad.
Donations in Andrew’s name can be made to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church or CancerCare Manitoba.
