Elizabeth “Betty” Cornwall née Granger was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on May 27, 1928. She graduated from Gordon Bell High School and attended business school, where she trained and learned the now extinct art of a stenographer, and learned shorthand.
Betty later joined the Women’s Army Corps and was offered a position at the military base in Shilo, Manitoba, where her shorthand skills were put to use. It was there that she met a very tall and handsome Clarence Cornwall, who was also stationed at Shilo. After a short courtship and engagement, they were married on December 8, 1962.
Betty and Clarence made their home in Brandon, Manitoba, where they raised their family. Betty stayed home while her children were young and later returned to work as a health care aide at the Brandon Assiniboine Centre and the new hospital that followed. She later worked at Vincent Massey High School and Brandon University before retiring early due to health issues.
Betty loved staying busy and meeting people. She became involved with the Arthritis Support Group, participating in pool therapy and eventually serving on its board. She was especially excited to attend a national conference in Toronto, which was her first time flying. She also enjoyed being part of the Little Bits of Brandon Miniature Club, where she learned to create miniature versions of EVERYTHING; and attended conferences to learn new skills.
Betty was friendly and welcoming, loved giving and receiving hugs, and almost always had a smile on her face. She especially treasured time with her grandchildren and had special names for each of them. She also enjoyed the occasional glass or two of white wine.
On May 23, 2012 Betty’s life forever changed with the passing of her husband, Clarence. With the support of her family, Betty continued living independently for several years. Eventually, as her memory declined, she moved to Fairview Home, where she spent her remaining years. She enjoyed many of the activities there, especially having her hair done, doing crafts, and attending pub nights where she could continue to have the occasional glass OR TWO of white wine.
Over the past year, Betty’s health declined, and she gradually stopped participating in many of the activities she once enjoyed. With the love and support of her family, Betty passed away on September 25, 2026.
Betty was predeceased by her parents, Ellen and Edwyn, her stepfather Bob, her husband Clarence, and her grandsons Christopher and Hagen.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Donna (Jack), Shelley (Greg), and Tom (Shauna); and her grandchildren, Kayla (Matt), Carson, and Michelle.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Fairview Home for the excellent care they provided to Betty.
Betty will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
