SUSAN PETERMAN
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Susan Peterman on September 27, 2026. Susan was born on April 20, 1959, in Winnipeg, Manitoba where she grew up and lived for most of her life.
She will be lovingly remembered by her partner of 27 years, Cheryl Susinski; her much-loved daughter Summer Guiboche Deneka; her sister Marsha Blore; brothers, Clarke and Donald Peterman; sister-in-law Julie Gervino; brother-in-law Bill (Elizan) Susinski; her dear nieces and nephews, Amy, Angela, Christopher, Christy, Coral, David, Drew, Evan, Mark, Micheal, Sara, Shay, Stephanie, and Tim; and her many wonderful friends. She was predeceased by her mother Frances; brother Neville; sister Frances (Rank); father Edward; and nephew Jeff.
Susan had a lifelong relationship with books and, in fact, worked for a time as the manager of Bold Print women’s bookstore in Osborne Village. She excelled at her job there, in large part due to her eidetic memory for books. She loved the stories and the women who frequented the store, often identifying for them a book by its cover, colour, or size, even if the title wasn’t known. Later in life, Susan was part of a book club for several decades, where she enjoyed continued dialogue on books with good women!
Her later work took her into health and social service settings as a social worker at North End Women’s Centre, Seven Oaks Hospital, and Health Sciences Centre. There, her strong sense of justice and equity, unique sense of humour, unorthodox style, and willingness to make her opinions forcefully known made her a powerful advocate for her clients.
Susan was a writer at heart and a keen observer of people and places, often turning her observations into beautiful poems and stories. She developed a passion for travel later in life, visiting places such as Turkey, Mexico, Greece, Osa Peninsula, Cost Rica, Italy, England, Newfoundland, and more. She enjoyed going on many of these trips with family and friends but also loved to travel alone where she could immerse herself in the stories, people, food, and colours of different lands.
Her family and friends brought great joy to her life as did her lifelong loves of music, theatre, art, and gardening. She turned the front and back lawns of the home she shared with Cheryl and Summer in Wolseley into works of art and creativity with flowers and blooms of all shapes and colours. Strangers often stopped by to compliment the collage of loveliness that she created. She loved to decorate for holidays and birthdays and enjoyed the many extended family dinners and celebrations that came with these occasions.
Susan brought her unique and sometimes contrary way of being in the world into her final years, defying her illness and medical predictions by living well and enjoying her life to the end. Cheryl and Summer would like to thank all the wonderful family and friends who provided care, food, friendship, and support through her last months and the teams at Palliative Care and CancerCare Manitoba who were there for us through the journey.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Susan at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Fort Garry, 830 North Drive, on October 17, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Susan’s name may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation.

My condolences to Cheryl, family and friends. I will remember Sue for her time at Bold Print where she sold me many books but also connected with many conversations. Our paths also crossed at Sherbrooke pool in the mornings where Sue and I would hang on the edge ( pretend swimming) while Cheryl swam! I also celebrated her and Cheryl’s union 27 years ago. I will remember her warmth, intellect and laughter. - Posted by: Gerry Pearson (Friend) on: Oct 25, 2026

I’m so sorry to hear of Sue’s passing. My condolences to Cheryl, Summer and all her family. I worked with Sue at North End Women’s Centre where she became a mentor and a friend. I will always remember her deep laugh, sense of humour, compassion and justice for the people she supported. We lived in the same building for a while so she also became my neighbor. I will miss seeing her in Wolseley and catching up on stuff. Sue was fun, serious and smart. She will be missed. - Posted by: Tracy Fehr (Co-worker and friend) on: Oct 05, 2026
