On October 2, 2026, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Joan passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours, with her husband by her side. She was 79.
Spouse, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many.
Joan is survived by her husband, Richard, of 53 years; her sons Derek (Heidi), Trevor (Hailey), and Kevin; her grandchildren Brenden, Macsen, Parker, Vivian, Tucker, and Finn; her sisters Eileen Edkins and Doreen Ander; and her special cousin, Donna Storsley; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
Born October 3, 1946, to Otto and Anne Zimmerman, Joan grew up in Winnipeg and became a nurse. She met her husband in St. Pierre, Manitoba, and the couple lived in Ottawa, Ontario; The Pas, Manitoba; and Tisdale, Saskatchewan, before returning to Winnipeg. She was an active member of her church and was very involved in the sporting lives of her children and grandchildren. Joan travelled to Europe and Asia, but she most enjoyed visiting her grandchildren in the United States.
Thank you to everyone who was a friend to Joan, and to those who came to visit in her last days. Thank you also to the Brightwater staff and the palliative care nurses who cared for Joan over her last months.
A service will be held at Ness Baptist Church, 2700 Ness Avenue, Winnipeg, on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Lunch will follow the service, and then interment. Please check with Wojcik’s Funeral Chapel for any changes to the service: www.wojciksfuneralchapel.com
