It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mom, Granny and Great-Granny on September 22, 2026 at the age of 101.
Mom was born in Emerson, Manitoba on April 24, 1925. She was the youngest of seven children - five brothers and one sister. At the tender age of 17, Mom met and married Doug Baylis, her husband of 64 years. Mom and Dad raised five children together.
Mom was a champion speed skater in her youth. She won the title of Miss St. Vital 1940. Mom spent her career lifeguarding and teaching swimming in various pools around the city until her retirement in 1986. After retirement, Mom and Dad spent their winters in San Diego. This is where Mom made her two prized holes in one. Mom and Dad spent many years as members of Southwood Golf & Country Club. Curling was a passion, and her seniors team scored a perfect eight ender. Mom was the biggest Blue Bomber fan.
Mom loved the sun her entire life. While others were sitting in the shade, she was always soaking up the sun and smiling. At her home on Lorette, she could frequently be found in her backyard enjoying the fresh air, relaxing on her swing. But Mom’s family was her pride and joy. Her children blessed her with ten grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
Mom was predeceased by her husband Doug, her sons, Doug and Jim, daughter-in-law Bev, and her six siblings. She is survived by her children, Linda (Jim), Greg (Linda), Deb (Dave) and all of their families. Our family has lost our matriarch, the Matthews clan, an end of an era.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers please donate to your favourite charity.
