LORRAINE MARGARET COON

(nee FINNSSON)

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Lorraine Margaret Coon (née Finnsson) announce her peaceful passing on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at the age of 83, at Grace General Hospital, with family by her side.

Lorraine, affectionately known as “Lolly” to her family and friends, leaves behind her daughters, Patricia (Gord) and Joanne (Wes); grandchildren Matthew, Kevin (Sarah), Michelle and Brianna (Adam); and great-grandchildren Levi, Margot, Anthony, Brinley and Charlie. She will also be lovingly remembered by her brothers Leonard (Christine) and Colin (Karen), sisters Sherri (Terry) and Glenda, sister-in-law Mary, as well as numerous extended family members and dear friends.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Roger, with whom she shared 51 years of marriage; her son, Raymond; her parents, Asgeir and Ruth Finnsson; her in-laws, Ethel and Ed Holton; her brother Ronnie (Gudrun); sisters Bernice and Linda; and brother-in-law Allen.

Mom was born in Winnipeg on October 13, 1942, but grew up on the family farm in Vidir. As the second oldest child and first-born daughter, she naturally took on a caring role within the family, helping to look after her younger siblings. Her nurturing and compassionate nature remained a defining part of who she was.

At the age of 17, Mom left home and began building a life of her own. She worked in Winnipeg and Calgary before settling in Gimli, where she was employed by MTS as a switchboard operator. It was there that she met Dad, who was stationed in Gimli with the R.C.A.F. They married and began their lifelong journey together.

Being married to a military man gave Mom the opportunity to experience life in different places and to see more of the world. One of the family’s favourite chapters was the time spent living in Germany, a place that remained special in their memories.

Mom was happiest when she was surrounded by people. There always seemed to be children around her - her own, children she was babysitting, or her children’s friends. Her home was a place where people felt welcome, and she was always willing to lend an ear, offer a shoulder to lean on, or simply be there when someone needed her. Caring for others was not something she had to think about; it was simply who she was.

Her greatest joy came from her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She cherished every moment spent with them and took immense pride in watching them grow. The love she gave so freely will continue to live on through the generations of her family.

Mom found happiness in the simple things in life. She loved gardening, crocheting, knitting, baking and reading. These were activities that brought her comfort and contentment, and many of the things she created and shared became part of the memories her family will treasure.

Mom will be remembered most for her kind heart, her compassion, her love of family, and the warmth she brought to those around her. She gave of herself generously and made people feel that they always had a place in her home and in her heart. Her absence will be deeply felt, but the love and memories she leaves behind will remain with her family and friends forever.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has already taken place. Mom will be laid to rest in Niagara Falls at a later date.
