John Campbell Angus passed away on October 13, 2026.
John was born in Winnipeg on March 30, 1943 to Phyllis and William (Bill) Angus. John is mourned by his wife Janice Charko; daughter Susan Angus (Isabelle and Dominic); son Colin Angus and Susanne (William, Alexander and Sam); extended family Rod and Visa Hutter (Alora, Aeidyn, Liam and Tianna); and by his best furry buddy, Monty. He was predeceased by his parents; and Karen Blevins - his first wife and the mother of his children.
John’s professional life began with GH Wood & Company but became interesting when he began to travel the country giving Salesmanship and Interpersonal Communication seminars through Red River Community College. He loved the interaction with budding salesmen. That career led him to become Vice President at Comcheq Payroll Services for several years.
When friends pressed him to run for City Council, he gave it a try and won the St. Norbert Council seat. It began a long career in politics - 23 years of which were at City Hall as Chairman of Works and Operations, on the Boards of the Victoria Hospital and the Winnipeg Enterprises Corporation among others, and, a stint as Deputy Mayor. In 1988, he moved to Provincial politics but after two years in the Legislature he returned to the Municipal level at City Hall where he felt he could make more of a difference. In the end, he left City Hall in 2005 to work for his friend, the Honourable Reg Alcock as his western Chief of Staff in Winnipeg.
In 2006, John retired and he and Janice began a life of summers at the cottage in Lac du Bonnet and winters in Six Lakes Country Club in Fort Myers. John used to say it was like living in a college dorm – there was always fun to be had somewhere!!!
In 2016, they sold the Six Lakes house and began spending winters on Vancouver Island - always renting a place right on the water and one with the mandatory hot tub that was part of their lives. In summers, John was the Broker of John Angus Realty until 2021 when he sold the business and retired for real.
John told Janice innumerable times that when he died, she was to tell people that he had had a wonderful life and regretted nothing! And if he was here, talking to you, he would give you a bottle of Angus wine and then quote from his favourite poem:

Offering my condolences Janice to you and the family. I especially remember all that John did for his community and want all to know that the creation of the Pembina Trail Library is thanks to his leadership. Myrtle Lorimer and I were so appreciative of all he did to make that happen. We had such a good collaboration in that effort. That is aside from the support he gave to the activities of Heritage St. Norbert amongst other projects. So many good times to be grateful for. - Posted by: Jane Fudge (Friend) on: Oct 18, 2026

I served for several years at the same time John was on Council. Over the years I came to see him as a friend. We differed in our politics on many issues. But I found there was a real respect there. Also a kindness. When I was going through personal issues he sent me the loveliest note. I also credit John with ensuring that the City Council pension was reestablished after previous councils had gotten rid of it. Because of John, I and other councillors have been able to retire with a sense of peace of mind. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. - Posted by: Jenny Gerbasi (served on City Council together) on: Oct 17, 2026
