DAVID YOUNG

February 19, 1934 - October 15, 2026

David Young passed away peacefully on October 15, 2026, at the age of 92. He was predeceased by his parents, Tom and Myrtle Young, his sister Donna Harrison, and his brother Jack Young.

David is lovingly remembered by Audrey, his wife of 66 years; his daughter, Lisa (Mike Griffin); his grandsons, David and Josh; his many nieces and nephews and their families; and his dear friend Diane Kunic.

Born in a house built by his grandfather on the family homestead near Birtle, Manitoba, David worked on the farm until age 16 and maintained a lifelong interest in agriculture, the land, and the natural environment. His education began at the single-room Rothesay School and eventually led him to United College, where he met Audrey, and later to the University of Michigan, where he earned a master's degree in Resource Management.

Over the course of a varied career, David worked for the Hudson's Bay Company, the Manitoba civil service, and the Manitoba Premier's Office before becoming a management consultant, entrepreneur, and adjunct faculty member at the Natural Resources Institute at the University of Manitoba. In 1977, he purchased a property on the Birch River in eastern Manitoba, where he devoted decades to gardening, habitat restoration, and building an energy-efficient home. Visitors to the farm rarely went home empty-handed.

A gifted storyteller with a sharp wit and wide-ranging curiosity, David was a devoted husband and father and the beloved "Silly Grandpa" to his grandsons.

He died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on his own terms and on a day of his choosing.

The family extends thanks to the staff of Brightwater Tuxedo for their care and kindness during David's final year.

In accordance with his wishes, no funeral service will be held. Those wishing to honour David's memory are invited to make a donation to the Henteleff Park Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I worked in the same offices as Dave in the late 1970s and 1980s (me UNIES, him Hildebrand-Young then Symbion ?sp?). His views and insights on a wide range of subjects were always worth a listen and consideration. He was a most interesting character. It was truly a privilege know him and consider him to be a friend. - Posted by: Bert Phillips (Colleague/friend) on: Oct 22, 2026

  • Uncle Dave was an amazing person. Always had a clever and considerate thing to say to me. I would often call him on my rural drive home in Saskatchewan. I would tell him about the canola fields I would pass by and he would ask the best questions! He will be missed by us all. Meghan, Keith and Kora - Posted by: Meghan Friesen (Niece) on: Oct 20, 2026

  • Our family has many fond memories of visits with David and Audrey and will always be thankful for the hours that David spent with our boys - on the farm in the gardens, exploring the land, playing in the dirt, driving the tractor, sharing stories, taking an interest in their lives and creating core memories. Our condolences to Audrey and family, David was very loved and will be greatly missed. - Love, Russ, Teri, Zak and Tyler Skakum - Posted by: Teri Skakum (Friend) on: Oct 17, 2026

  • Visiting our Mrs. Young out at the farm David was always happy to show us his Shitake mushrooms growing that he had seeded on a log, the asparagus everywhere, the purple cauliflower. My deepest condolences to Audrey (Mrs. Young) RIP David. - Posted by: Suzanne Stockmann-Mansell (Friend) on: Oct 17, 2026
