Nettie Neufeld (nee Friesen) was born on January 29, 1925, to Katharina and Bernhard Friesen of Edenthal, Manitoba between Gretna and Emerson. She was a very active child and that characteristic continued throughout her life.
School was very enjoyable for Nettie, especially the music which resulted in her singing in duets, trios, quartets and choirs. She graduated with her grade 12 diploma from Mennonite Collegiate Institute in Gretna in 1943. That same year, Nettie was baptized upon the confession of her faith by Bishop David Schulz, and she became a member of the Bergthaler Church of Manitoba.
Her teaching career started at a Hutterite colony for one year before attending Normal School in Winnipeg. Then with a teacher’s certificate she taught in the village of Neuhorst for two years and this became a highlight in her life. She continued teaching another two years in Steinbach where more good experiences happened in both school and church, especially that of singing and teaching Sunday School.
Canadian Mennonite Bible College was a new Bible college in Winnipeg. Her heart pointed her in that direction along with other people’s encouragement. She took this as God’s will for her life.
At CMBC, Nettie found deep satisfaction in studying the Bible and singing together in an Octet that travelled across Canada.
It was during this time, that Nettie met Abe Neufeld, who was studying at CMBC. They fell in love and were married on August 25, 1951, in Rosenfeld, Manitoba.
They began their pastoral ministry in 1951, and they ended up serving three congregations throughout the years - New Westminster, BC, Swift Current, SK and Steinbach, MB. They also lived in Saskatoon for six years where Nettie taught full-time in the public school system.
Abe and Nettie lived in Steinbach for sixteen years before moving to Winnipeg in their retirement. They loved the fellowship of their home congregation - Bethel Mennonite Church.
On February 14, 2013, Abe and Nettie moved to Altona, Manitoba to live closer to family, so that greater attention and care could happen in their later years. Following a hospital stay, Nettie was diagnosed with dementia and soon moved into the Eastview Personal Care Home in Altona. Nettie received wonderful care from the Eastview staff during the next eleven years. Her love of music and her positive attitude was appreciated by all who cared for her. The family extends a heartfelt thanks to all the Eastview Care Team.
On September 16, 2026, at the age of 101 years, Nettie passed away peacefully into the comforting care of her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Left to mourn her passing are her children, Marlene and Ellery Peters (Kamloops, BC), Don and Bev Neufeld (Cochrane, Alberta) and Rick and Caroline Neufeld (Altona, Manitoba), eight grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren along with numerous nephews and nieces.
A service of celebration for Nettie’s life will take place on Saturday, October 24, 2026 at 2:30 p.m. at the Bergthaler Mennonite Church of Altona, 117 2nd St. NW. For those who wish to receive the livestream link please call Chapel Lawn.
