PENNI MITCHELL

1959 - 2026

Penni was a brilliant feminist and writer. Born in Winnipeg to Shirley (née Vogler) and William (Bill) Mitchell, she grew up with her sisters, Dawn and Kelli, in Windsor Park.

While studying journalism at Red River College, she met a boy named Michael Balagus. The two had a daughter, Kaitlyn, in 1983. Penni dedicated herself to instilling humanitarian values in her daughter so that she would be an “advocate of progressive social change” so needed in the world.

Penni was the editor of Herizons, which became a national magazine and a voice for the Canadian women’s movement. She was a regular Winnipeg Free Press columnist and wrote a book on the history of women’s rights, About Canada: Women’s Rights.

After coming out as an adult, Penni developed a new group of friends who became her extended family. She was a rock to many, offering unwavering support through all of life’s adversities.

Penni loved her grandchildren, Lennox and Maeve, fiercely. They were her favourite people.

Penni passed away on October 15th. Her life and legacy are a reminder to work relentlessly to make the world a better, more equitable, and just place. Smash the patriarchy. But be sure to surround yourself with love and joy along the way.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Penni was my first ever roommate. We shared a 3 bedroom apartment in Windsor Park for 2-1/2 years back in the early 80’s. Penni was a wonderful person, very funny and had a very kind heart. Shocked to hear of her passing. I have nothing but respect and fond memories. RIP Penni. - Posted by: Keith Elder (Old friend) on: Oct 25, 2026

  • Sincere condolences to Penni’s family. I was so fortunate to connect with Penni as a journalism student in Red River College’s Creative Communications course. She was a knowledgeable, well-spoken advocate for women and a kind, supportive. thoughtful friend during the lowest point of my life. Great respect for Penni and so sorry to lose her. - Posted by: Gerri Thorsteinson (Friend, colleague.) on: Oct 24, 2026

  • I remember Penni well from our days at Red River. We had lots of conversations about the course and she gave the staff of Free Times a lot of help. She was one of the best. - Posted by: Phil Mowatt (friend from Red River Community College) on: Oct 24, 2026
