Carol Marie Zilkey (nee Rawn), 84, of Winnipeg, MB passed away peacefully on October 19, 2026, at Riverview Health Centre, in the arms of her devoted and loving husband, Bryan.
Born on April 20, 1942, in Oshawa, ON, to the late Marie and Peter Rawn, the family moved to Chilliwack, BC where Peter was stationed during the war. The time spent in British Columbia was the start of Carol's lifelong love of the mountains. After moving to Winnipeg, Carol attended Mulvey school and graduated from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate where she was freshie queen and a cheerleader and later, a Winnipeg Warriorette.
After noticing each other on the bus, and a chance meeting in Clear Lake, MB, Carol married the love of her life, Bryan on August 18, 1962, and together they built a wonderful life together. A stay-at-home mom, Carol devoted herself to caring for her two children and managing the home. She taught her children to read and write, to cook (especially the secret family recipes), and drove them to their sporting activities and other pursuits. She valued relationships with close friends, laughs at dinner parties, catching up with Bryan after supper, a cup of tea on a rainy day, and spending each summer at the family cottage in Ponemah, where she welcomed visits from overseas family. Carol was very happy to have four grandchildren who she enjoyed spending time with and loved very much.
Carol always had an interest in the arts, and a sharp eye for fashion and home décor. She co-designed the former family home on McNulty Crescent, where life as a riparian was peaceful and fulfilling. She mastered knitting, crocheting and petit-point, and studied needlework under Leonida learning crewel and Japanese Kogin embroidery, many of which she taught to her daughter. Later in life, she took up watercolour and acrylic painting. Her home was filled with her works of art.
Carol enjoyed travelling, including visits to Europe, ocean and river cruises, and travel to southern locations in the US, Jamaica and Mexico. But no travel was as anticipated as travel to the mountains. In 2014, Carol and Bryan moved briefly to Calgary to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren, and the mountains.
Carol is survived by her husband of 64 years, Bryan, her children, Blair (Mark) of Toronto, ON, and Megan Hughesman (Will), her four grandchildren, David Zilkey (Kestrel) of Huntsville, ON, Noah, Molly, and Waverley, sister Sandra Reid (Dale), brother Gary (Thea) of Ottawa, ON, and extended family, especially Peter (Mary) and MaryAnn (David) in the UK.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place with no funeral service as she will be interred with her husband at a future date in the Brookside Cemetery family plot. Special thanks to the Riverview ACE 2A staff who cared for Carol in her final year. If desired, a donation in Carol's name to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba would be appreciated.
