REES MERTHYN JONES

August 21, 1943 - September 27, 2026

Rees Jones passed away in Winnipeg on September 27, 2026, at 83, leaving behind many wonderful memories, enduring friendships, and a family that meant the world to him.

Born in Dauphin, Manitoba, Rees grew up in Flin Flon before moving to Winnipeg in 1958. A chartered accountant, he enjoyed a successful career with Richardson Greenshields and Investors Group, followed by senior financial roles with several Winnipeg companies.

Rees was predeceased by his parents, Ron and Eva Jones, and his beloved wife Pat. Married in 1970, they built a happy life together surrounded by family and good friends. Pat was the love of his life, and he missed her greatly after her passing.

He leaves behind his much-loved children, Stefanie (Niall), Jeremy and Cortney (Nathan); his grandchildren, Patrick and Cailin McGrath, who brought him tremendous joy; and siblings, Leslie Adams, Rick Jones (Mary) and Ronalee Jones, and an extended family of nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Rees was very close to Rick, his brother and lifelong friend. In his final months especially, Rick was always there for him.

Rees also had an extraordinary gift for friendship. A proud, lifelong member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity, he remained close to the friends he made there, including the Penthouse group that began at the DU house in the 1960s. They shared decades of parties, dinners, get-togethers and, above all, laughter. Rees loved being surrounded by his friends, and those lifelong bonds were among the great joys of his life. Among those friendships, he particularly cherished his more than 60 years of friendship with Mack and Ruth Smith and Rick Pinchin.

A longtime member and past president of Southwood Golf and Country Club, Rees never let his lack of golfing prowess diminish his love of the game. His talents were better displayed at the poker or pool table, or working his way through a crossword puzzle, and he always enjoyed a little gambling. And through it all, there was his favourite drink - a vodka martini with lots of olives.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Way.
