With sadness, we announce the passing of Richard Joseph Fritschy, who died suddenly in Winnipeg on August 15, 2026, at the age of 69.
Rick is survived by his children, Palmer (Lindsay) of Toronto and Paige (Aadil) of Winnipeg, his sisters, Tina and Teresa (Luke), nephew Tyler and niece Lauren, as well as many friends, cousins and extended family members. He was predeceased by his parents, Herman and Katy Fritschy.
A lifelong Winnipegger, Rick spent much of his life in St. Vital, where he built lasting friendships and developed a love of sports. He played football and baseball for club teams in St. Vital and at Dakota Collegiate, where he formed relationships that remained important throughout his life.
Along with their mother, Rick raised his children with deep devotion, spending years taking them to sports, music lessons and other activities. He volunteered at their schools and coached and served as an administrator for several of Palmer's teams, giving his time generously to his children and their friends.
Rick was a natural and patient teacher who took great pride in sharing what he knew. He taught his children to read, ski and cook, fostering their curiosity and love of learning.
As a family, they enjoyed many wonderful vacations around the world. Rick encouraged his children to experience different places and cultures, broadening their perspectives and nurturing their curiosity about the world beyond home.
A talented cook, he took great pleasure in preparing meals and entertaining, regularly opening his home to family, friends and visitors.
He was a passionate fan of sports, particularly the Winnipeg Jets and Miami Dolphins, always happy to discuss a game, players or teams.
Rick also had a deep appreciation for music, a love he passed on to his children and especially shared with Palmer, attending concerts together and bonding over bands and albums.
Above all, Rick found his greatest happiness in his children. He loved Palmer and Paige unconditionally and took enormous pride in their lives, remaining a constant source of love and support.
The family extends its gratitude to the staff of Rotunda Towers for their generosity and support.
A memorial celebrating Rick's life will be held November 7, 2026 at Norberry Community Centre in Winnipeg at 2:00 p.m.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all those who cared for him.
