J. DORIS HUNT At Tuxedo Villa after a lengthy convalescence, Doris Hunt passed away with her family at her side. She leaves to mourn, but to cherish her memory, her adopted family: Sharon, Kent, Anne, Timothy (Pam) Dowell. She will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by her wonderfully devoted lifelong friends, Merle Cox and Mary Davies. Doris emigrated from England in 1913 at the age of four. She graduated from Wesley College in 1929 and was awarded a scholarship to further her studies at the Sorbonne University, Paris, France. Later Doris formally studied art in Winnipeg, France, Mexico. She became a recognized artist whose paintings have sold internationally. Doris taught at Mount Royal College, Alberta, and then for 25 years at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate where she was Department Head in both French and Art. She met her students emotional as well as scholastic needs and through the years many have kept contact from far-flung parts of the world. Doris was willing and able to contribute much to her profession by holding various positions in the Winnipeg Division Association, the Manitoba Teachers Society, the Teachers Retirement Allowance Board, the Canadian College of Teachers. She was on the committee that formed the Association of Retired Teachers of Manitoba and served on the executive. Recognition of her many contributions resulted in Doris being made an honorary member of MTS, RTAM, and a Fellow of the Canadian College of Teachers. She received the silver medal of the Alliance Francaise for her promotion of French language and culture in Alberta. Doris enjoyed all of these honours but always told us that her greatest satisfaction came from sharing totally in the lives of the Dowell family members. Our lives have been much enriched by her loyalty, compassion, wisdom, support and abundant love. She was never too busy to listen or to share in our joys and sorrows. She took pride in our accomplishments as though they were her own. She perceived when help was needed; never had to be asked. The family extends appreciation and gratitude to Tuxedo Villa staff who have cared for Doris for the past three years. Particular thanks goes to Marcia Schellenberg and Laurie Tooth for their warmth and compassion. God Bless You, Doris. You will always be loved. You will never be forgotten. A memorial service for Doris will be held on September 11 at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Church, Corydon and Lanark Street.
