WALTER C. SPARKES On Monday, September 20, 1999 at home surrounded by all of his family, Walter passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Surviving Walter are his wife Lyn (nee Boyle), daughter Pam Sparkes and Janice Werntz and husband Jeff, with grandchildren Jessica and Bryan. Walter and Lyn had celebrated their thirty eighth wedding anniversary in June of this year. Walter is also survived by his father Arthur Sparkes, brother Gordon and wife Sandy, by his sister Marilyn MacKay and husband Fred and by sister-in-law Diane Sparkes. He was predeceased by his mother, Rosemary, on November 11, 1996. Walter is also survived by Lyns family, Carole and Lyall Handford, Stephen and Diane Boyle, Larry Boyle and companion Liz Wirsching, also by many nieces and nephews. Walter was born on October 5, 1938 and had resided in St. James all of his life. He had been employed by the Winnipeg Art Gallery since 1987 and previously by McGavin Foods for over twenty years. A luncheon reception in honour of Walters memory will be held on Friday, September 24 at 1:00 p.m. in the Merrie Monarch Room of the Viscount Gort Hotel, 1670 Portage Avenue. All friends, neighbours and co-workers are invited to join with the family at this time. In lieu of flowers, it would be appreciated if contributions could be made to the Manitoba Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation, 100 Olivia Street, Winnipeg or the Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent Street, Winnipeg. Lyn, Pam, Janice and Jeff are extremely grateful for the tremendous support of all of our family and friends during these last difficult months and especially thank Carole and Lyall Handford. We also wish to extend our sincere gratitude to Shirley Toews and Barb Bell of the V.O.N., Laurie Read, Nurse Manager, Oncology/Palliative Care at Grace Hospital, Dr. J. Mulder and Dr. M. El-Tair, the nursing staff of 4 South Grace Hospital, Dr. Gary Schroeder and Radiation Therapy staff, M.C.F., and all others involved in Walters care.
