MARY EWASHKO (nee SHANDALA) Peacefully, with her family be her side on September 20, 1999 at Tache Nursing Centre, Mary Ewashko at the age of 106 entered into eternal rest. Mary was predeceased by her husband Paul in 1964 and her sons, Donald, Bill, Peter, Mike and grandsons, Steve, Lawrence, Glen and Joe. Mary is survived by her son John (Virginia) and daughters, Katie (Adam) Wolski, Anne (Nick) Zahodnik, Sophie Pestaluky, Margaret (John) McMurray and Florence (Joe) Casciano as well as 33 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-granchildren. Mary was born on June 29, 1893 in Bichkowic-Chortkiw, Austria. At the age of six, her and her family immigrated to Canada and settled at Ozerna district. Mary remembered the pain of her mother selling her schoolbooks in order to purchase tickets for the voyage, marking the end of her formal schooling. As the oldest child, she would help look after her younger siblings and work in the fields. Mary often reminisced about picking berries and going to the nearest town to trade them for flour or sugar. At the age of 17, Mary wed Paul Ewashko and they made a home for themselves near Erickson, MB. The homestead is still farmed by her family. In 1970, Mary moved to Winnipeg to live with her youngest daughter Florence and her family. At the age of 99, Mary moved to the Tache Nursing Centre. Babas joy was having her family around and was known to have peppermint candies to give those who came to see her. Both Baba and her family treasured the stories of her many life experiences. Babas loving, caring, generous nature was reflected in everything she did. Prayers will be said Thursday, September 23 at 7:30 p.m. at Knysh Funeral Home, 1020 Main St. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 24 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthonys Church in Jackfish/Erickson, MB with Fr. Paul Hancko officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery. The family extends their sincere thanks to the staff of Tache Nursing Centre for their loving care and kindness. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to the Tache Nursing Centre Pastoral Care. May you find external rest and peace in Gods hands. You will always be in our hearts and prayers.
