HENRY MARTENS It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Henry Martens, on Saturday, September 25, 1999 at Victoria General Hospital. Henry is survived by his sons, Gerry (Audrey), Don (Phyllis), Rick and Doug (Kerri) and daughter Judy (Al Allard) along with grandsons, Jeff, Jason, Ashton, Brett and Riley and granddaughters, Katrina and Lauren. He is also survived by one sister Lena (Nestor St. Vincent) and three sisters-in-law, Helen, Irene and Betty, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Henry also leaves to cherish his memory his friend and companion, Anne Bates. Henry was born in Lowe Farm, Manitoba on November 5, 1929. He was one of six children. He was predeceased by his parents John H. and Gertrude Martens; his brothers, Pete, Frank, Jake and John and his nephews, Norman, Peter and Bruce. Dad had many interest and hobbies, a few of which were bowling weekly in two leagues, woodworking, fishing and hunting. Dad donated his time to the Christmas Cheer Board yearly in helping to prepare Christmas Hampers and also volunteered his time at Stony Mountain Penitentiary in counselling sessions with the inmates where Dad gained a new respect and understanding of others. During his residence at Bluebird Lodge, Dad served on various committees organizing barbecues, holiday dinners, bingo, with the highlight being the annual Christmas Tree Lights Tour. The highlight of each year for Dad was the annual fishing trip whether it was to Moon Lake in Riding Mountain National Park or to Craven Lake in Atikaki Wilderness Park. Dads competitive nature led to many laughs, songs and fishing stories for all to remember and cherish. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 30 at 1:00 p.m. at Sparling United Church, l609 Elgin Ave. West, Winnipeg, with Rev. Ritchie officiating. Family and friends are invited to a reception at Sparling United Church following the service. A private interment will be held at a later date. Dad had many friends, all of whom are considered to be Honorary Pallbearers. The family would like to thank the staff of Victoria General Hospital, and in particular the Emergency Room, Intensive Care and Unit 5 Medicine, Dr. Blank and Dr. Lipson, along with the entire Home Care Department. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dads memory to the Canadian Cancer Society (Manitoba Division), 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg. Cropo Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements, 586-8044.
