JOHN DOWHAN It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of John Dowhan, aged 90, on Wednesday, September 29, 1999 at Seven Oaks Hospital. John was born on May 5, 1909 in selo Kryvytsia, region of Rava Ruska, W. Ukraine. He was the oldest child of Michael and Malania (Wityk) Dowhan. His parents died when he was young and he was left to take care of his younger brothers and sister. In 1958 John came to Canada with his wife and two daughters, and worked as a carpenter most of his life. He was a member of Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral for 40 years; member of Institute Prosvita, Ukrainian Canadian Congress and Taras Shevchenko Foundation; Zoloti Vorota, Institute Prosvita and St. Josephs Ukrainian Catholic Church Seniors Clubs. Besides his beloved wife of 65 years Irene (Kuc), he leaves to mourn his two daughters, Sylvia (George) Sharaburak of Winnipeg, Kathy Timpson of Montreal; granddaughter Oksana (Peter) Zmiyiwsky of Edmonton; grandson George Sharaburak; great-grandchildren, Adrian and Oleksander Zmiyiwsky of Edmonton; brother Gregory (Parania) Dowhan and his children, George, Marijka (Walter) Cidylo and children all of Toronto; nephews, Michael Dowhan of Germany, Zenon Dowhan and family of Poland; sister-in-law Maria Dowhan; nephew Ihor, nieces, Eugenia and Malania with their families all from Lviv, Ukraine; numerous cousins in Ukraine and Poland. He was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Malania (Wityk) brothers, Myron (1964), Michael (1982), sister Kateryna (March 1999), son-in-law Paul Timpson (1991). Panakhyda will be sung 5:00 p.m. Sunday, October 3 at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, 115 McGregor St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 4 also at the Cathedral, with Rev. M. Kouts officiating. Interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery. Honourary pallbearers will be members of Zoloti Vorota and Institute Prosvita Seniors Clubs. Active pallbearers will be J. Bereza, H. Bereza, F. Foga, H. Krawczuk, J. Karpa and W. Pizycky. If friends so desire, donations may be made to Pomich Ukraini in Johns memory.
