MARGARET ANNE SELLERS (nee AIKINS) Margaret Anne Sellers died in Winnipeg, Manitoba on October 1, 1999. Born in 1915, the former Peggy Aikins was a lifelong resident of Winnipeg. She was the first recipient of the Janice Filmon Award for Leadership in the Advancement of Cancer Care and Research in Manitoba. In 1998 she established the Margaret Anne Sellers Chair of Cell Biology at the Manitoba Cancer Foundation. In 1987 she established the George H. Sellers Endowment Fund for the express purpose of promoting research for the treatment of cancer. Her work as a volunteer patient representative at the Cancer Foundation led to the development of patient advocates. She received an Honorary Doctor of Canon Law from St. Johns College; she had been made an Honorary Fellow in 1986. Throughout her life she was an active volunteer, fund raiser and philanthropist. Her interests included Balmoral Hall School for Girls and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. She was a former member of the board of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, St. Johns College and the Red River Exhibition. A well-known equestrienne, Peg was instrumental in introducing dressage to Western Canada. In 1971 she loaned a horse to the Canadian Equestrian Team which won a gold medal in dressage at the Pan Am Games in Cali, California. Her other varied interests included tennis, painting, weaving, embroidery, interior design and landscaping. For over fifty years she was best friend, helpmate and supporter of her husband George in his many business and community activities. She was predeceased by her husband George Henry Sellers and son David Henry Aikins Sellers. She is survived by two daughters, Anne Harvey and husband John of Mississauga and Joan Audette of Ocala, Florida; her daughter-in-law Erin Sellers of Banff; her sisters, Dime Riley of Winnipeg and Jean Mulholland of Oakville. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, James Sellers and wife Margot Naudie, Leslie Sellers and husband Greg Patychuk, Kate Tooke and husband Rob, Kim Nichols and husband Don, Sarah McLeish and husband Greg, Chris Harvey, Meg Audette and Ryan Audette and great-grandchildren, Georgia and Jacob Tooke, Tia Patychuk and Brittney Nichols. A funeral service will be held at St. Georges Anglican Church at 168 Wilton St., Winnipeg at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 5, 1999. The family wishes to give special thanks to Carolyn Barrit, Gail Best, Dr. Lorne Brandes and the staff of D4 Health Sciences Centre.
