Date of Passing: Oct 03, 1999
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. GORDON JAMIESON SMITH It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the death of our beloved husband, father and grandfather. Dr. Gordon Jamieson Smith died on October 3, 1999 at Victoria General Hospital, with his family at his side. His memory will forever warm the hearts of his loving wife Mabel; his children, Shelby Flood (Gerald), Gordon, Kenneth (Joanne), Pamela Rutherford (Ian) and his grandchildren, Megan and Heather Flood, Erica, Adam, and Robin Smith, Gail and Kevin Rutherford. He was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Frank Smith and Elizabeth Mary Smith; his two sisters, Marion Abra and Norah Duncan; as well as four brothers, Campbell, Kenneth, Frank and Leonard. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Dr. John Abra, Dr. Barrie Duncan (Regina), and sister-in-law, Mrs. Florence Smith; as well as many nieces and nephews. Gordon was born in Winnipeg in 1923. He attended St. Johns College School and Gordon Bell High School. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Manitoba in 1948. Following a year of post-graduate training at Deer Lodge Hospital, he took over a family practice in Gladstone, MB, where he worked until 1963. He then completed a residency in Psychiatry, receiving his fellowship in 1967. He joined the newly opened Victoria General Hospital in 1971 as Chief of Psychiatry, and continued in that position until 1985. He was President of Medical Staff at Victoria General Hospital from 1986 to 1988. Gordon had a gift for making people feel good about themselves. He was unfailingly supportive of all his family and friends, and always looked on the bright side. He was sincerely proud of the achievements of others around him, and rarely discussed his own accomplishments. He lived for his wife, his children, and his grandchildren, who in his eyes could do no wrong. Heartfelt thanks go to Dr. Brian Sharkey, Dr. Duncan Scurrah, Dr. Ian Maxwell, and Dr. Keith Jones; to Astrid and Bonnie in Oncology at Victoria General Hospital, who showed such compassion; to the wonderful nurses on the 4th floor of the Victoria General Hospital, most especially Linda, Ferdinand, and Sharon, and finally to Dr. Dane Hershberg for the strength of his support, and a shoulder to cry on. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Manitoba Division of the Canadian Cancer Society. Cremation has taken place, and a service of remembrance will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Ave., West, Winnipeg, MB, on Saturday, October 9 at 12:30 p.m. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CEMETERY & CREMATORIUM 885-9715
