Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNELL NEWMAN (ODONNELL) (nee SMITH) With the greatest of sorrow the family announces the peaceful passing of Nell Newman on October 2, 1999. Nell was born on November 19, 1912 in St. Marks, MB. Growing up as one of 13 children she learned the importance of hard work and love of life. As a young woman, Nell married. The greatest accomplishment and joy in her life was her three children, Harvey, Barry and Maxine. Years later, faced with a new challenge, Nell moved to Portage la Prairie with her three children. Although they never had much, she always made sure there was lots of love, food on the table and a warm place called home. In 1950 Nell moved the family to Winnipeg and gained employment at a small diner. She then worked for 22 years at the Old Bonar and Bemis plant. It was during this time Nell met and later married Lefty. How do you tell someone about Nell Newman, except to say she had the soul of an angel and a heart of pure gold. Nell wrote the book of being a mother, grandmother and GG. GG was her label she wore proudly as a great-grandmother. Her family meant everything and were the branches on her tree. Nell loved to knit for everyone as well as to bake. She was famous for her cinnamon buns and bannock and taught many of us a recipe or two. She was always there to help with home remedies and the olden day ways. She has left us with a smile when we think of her sense of humour, her keen wit and the hilarious old sayings that would surprise us all. She had such character, pride and determination. She never forgot a birthday or anniversary. She always said she didnt need anything, just send me a card. She loved old time music, dancing, hockey, a friendly game of crib and an evening of bingo. Nell was a member of the Walking Club at Polo Park. She enjoyed participating with the seniors group in her apartment. Nell is predeceased by her husband David A. Newman; her son Harvey ODonnell; her grandson, Darryl McReynolds; three brothers and six sisters. She will be forever loved and sadly missed by her son Barry (Faye), daughter Maxine (Wayne) and daughter-in-law Anita and adopted family, Ron and Annette and boys. Also left to mourn are her six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Ruby and Edna and her brother Bud. She has also left behind a wealth of family and friends. She was everyones Grandma and her arms were always open for a hug and a love. It was Nells wish to have a graveside service which will be held on Thursday, October 7 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Marks, MB at the church yard. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Nells memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Directions to cemetery: Hwy. 1 west to PTH 430 north until St. Marks sign. Turn left for one mile then right for one half mile. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200
