ELEANOR C. JOHNSON Peacefully, on Tuesday, October 5, 1999, Eleanor Cadwell Johnson, widow of Dr. Edward A. Johnson. Born August 27, 1904 in Middlechurch, Manitoba, Eleanor was the youngest of six daughters and three sons born to John and Charlotte Emes. She married Edward Johnson on July 7, 1931 and moved to Selkirk where they raised three children. She was always the consummate wife, hostess and companion during the 64 years of their marriage. As mother she instilled a great and lasting love of the English language in her children. This included 63 years of corrections to grammar, diction and spelling. In preparation for their adult lives, she provided the very best through teaching and example of correct manners and the figure of the ultimate hostess. One such lesson was that, when passing a tray of dainties, it was preferable to retrieve a wayward dainty from the floor with the fingers and return it to the kitchen rather than kick it under the nearest chair. She was predeceased by her husband in 1994, and her daughter Arlene in 1968. She leaves the legacy of her pride, her sense of humour and above all, her dignity to her two remaining children, Cynthia Webster and Garth Johnson; her five grandchildren, Micheal, Mae, Gareth, Stefanie and Paul Johnson; her three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Many thanks go to the staff of Tudor House, Selkirk for their superlative care of Eleanor during her short time there, and the kindness and support shown to her and to the family during her last days.
