Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGORDON ROSS NICHOL On Monday, October 11, 1999, at the MacGregor Health Centre, Gordon Ross Nichol of MacGregor, beloved husband of Miriam Eleanor Nichol, passed away at the age of 88 years. Funeral service will be held at the MacGregor United Church, MacGregor, Manitoba, on Friday, October 15 at 3:30 p.m. Interment of the cremated remains will take place at a later date. Gordon was born on May 17, 1911, fourth son of Samuel and Alice Nichol at Bagot. He attended elementary school at Bagot and Neepawa. He worked on his fathers farm and also for neighbours. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1940 to 1945, being stationed at Brandon, St. Thomas, MacDonald and Winnipeg. On November 13, 1943, he married Miriam Askin and they lived in Portage la Prairie until 1945 when he was discharged from the Air Force. They then moved to Bagot, taking over the family farm when his father and mother retired. Here they raised a family of three sons and one daughter. He loved the farm and enjoyed his family and visiting with neighbours and relatives. In 1984 Gordon and Miriam moved to a house on Park Drive in MacGregor and in 1997 they moved into the Beaver Creek Villa. Gordon was a member of the Masonic Temple Lodge No. 49, being Master of the Lodge in 1973, continuing membership in Gothic Temple Lodge No. 49 when MacGregor and Austin amalgamated. He was a member of the United Church at Bagot and later at MacGregor. In earlier years, he was an avid hockey player and also enjoyed curling and baseball. He was a Cub Leader for many years. Gordon took an active part in community affairs, having been trustee of Bagot School and held various offices in the Bagot Community Club, United Church, Curling Club, MacGregor Golf Club and Get-Together Club. Gordon and Miriam enjoyed square-dancing for many years in Portage, St. Claude and Gladstone Clubs, as well as being members of the Electra Chapter No. 2 Order of the Eastern Star in Portage which he joined in 1975. He was worthy Patron in 1979, 1981 and 1986. Gordon also served on the Grand Lodge as a representative to Denmark for a short period of time. Predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Roy, Allan and Edward; nephews, Bob Nichol, Mack Nichol; he leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memory his wife Miriam; three sons, Ross and his wife Francine of Calgary, Alberta, Gerry of Picture Butte, Alberta, Bill and his wife Leslie of Winnipeg; daughter Judy Quinn and son-in-law Glenn Quinn of Calgary, Alberta; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four brothers, Bert and wife Vera of MacGregor, Cecil and wife Doreen of Airdrie, Alberta, Glen and wife Gladys of Bagot, Howard of Edmonton, Alberta; two sisters, Alice Bodie of Gladstone, Florie Nichol of Calgary, Alberta; sisters-in-law, Marg Nichol of Wawanesa, Manitoba, Ivy Nichol of Winnipeg, and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Omega Funeral Home, 83 Royal Road South, Portage la Prairie for visitation on Thursday, this evening from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Should friends so desire memorial donations may be made to the MacGregor Health Centre, General Delivery, MacGregor, Manitoba, R0H 0R0; MacGregor United Church, General Delivery, MacGregor, Manitoba R0H 0R0 or a charity of their choice.
