WESLEY CRAWFORD CAMPBELL 1926 - 1999 With great sadness our family announces the peaceful passing of Crawford Campbell, on October 20, 1999 at St. Boniface Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer. Crawford is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Valerie (nee Francis) his sons, Rick (Barbara) of Calgary and children, Joshua, Stacy and Gary and Alex Kehler; Todd (Lori) and children, Andrea and Stephanie; and daughter Susan (Wade) Robillard and children, Daniel, Andrew, Scott and Steven. He also leaves to mourn his sisters, Anne (Einar) Egilsson, Hazel Kelly, Vivian White and his brothers, Frank (Ivy), Gordon (Vivian) and Colin (Audrey). Also left to mourn his passing are Vals brother Allan Francis and his wife Helen and her sister Pat Rieman along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Mayme Shurvell and his brother Rodney. Crawford was born in Isabella, Manitoba where he took his early education. He received his B.A. in 1946 at United College and even before completing his examinations, joined the Colleges Department of Mathematics at age 19 to assist in teaching the special classes of returning servicemen from the Second World War. This marked the beginning of a career which spanned 43 years until his retirement in 1989. When he was made a Fellow of United College he was described as "probably the finest teacher of the institution whose lucid explanations of complex theory, his infinite patience, his open door policy and his willingness to share his expertise with others were known and admired by generations of students." He held the position of Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics for 24 years while still teaching a full course load. Crawford was a man of honour and integrity. He had the mind of a scientist and the soul and talent of an artist. He was a longtime member of the United Church of Canada and was a member of the Planning Committee for its 50th anniversary celebrations. Crawford was a founding member of the Silver Heights United Church and in latter years he served the Sturgeon Creek United Church as Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent of Sunday School and as a board member in various capacities. Crawford was very involved in all activities of his children as they grew up and when he became "Poppa" to his grandchildren he followed all of their activities and achievements with the same interest and passion. One of Crawfords greatest joys was the family cottage at Brereton Lake. The cottage became the focal point of four generations of family and friends including the friends of his children and grandchildren. Crawford considered himself to have been a lucky man to have been able to enjoy a full and active retirement with Val including many memorable trips. Crawford was a man with few regrets, his life was rich with the love of family and many good friends - he was quick to share a laugh, lend a hand or give a hug. The family extends their thanks to Dr. Charles Olweney, the nursing staff of 5B, Palliative Care and all the staff of the Emergency Department. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Crawford Campbell Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o the University of Winnipeg, 515 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3B 3E9. The memorial service will be held at the Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Dr. on Monday, October 25 at 2:00 p.m. The memorial service will be conducted by Reverend Nancy Sanders and Reverend Robert Campbell. Children hardly know or guess the love their fathers cant express With thoughts he seldom said aloud, his heart is warm, his feelings proud They do not fully understand his wisdom and his guiding hand, They do not know each helpful word holds love unspoken, hope unheard Yet as the busy years roll past, they come to understand at last The worries and the fears he knew the problem times he pulled them through, They finally learn the full extent of what a fathers love has meant and realize how great its been To have a father just like him.
