WILLIAM ELLIOT SHIELDS Following a lengthy illness, Bill passed away on October 22, 1999 at the Deer Lodge Centre. Besides Marion, his wife of 56 years, Bill leaves to cherish his memory his children, Doug (Sharon), Susan (Wayne), Barbara (Denis), Bill (Linda) and Kate (Paul), and his grandchildren. Bill is also survived by his sister Shirley, brother-in-law Bill East and their children. Bill was born in Edmonton, Alberta on July 30, 1920 and spent his childhood in Saskatchewan. After a brief time at the Bank of Montreal, he enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1941. Bill served in the Aleutians and overseas. Following the war, he attended the University of Manitoba, graduating with the Gold Medal for Commerce in 1949. Bill qualified as a chartered accountant and was a partner with Clarkson Gordon until his retirement in 1981. Bill was president of the Manitoba Institute of Chartered Accountants in 1967. Bill had a great commitment to community service, serving on the board of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, as Treasurer of the Winnipeg Jets, and as President of the Winnipeg Clinic Foundation. He was a loyal member of St. Peters Church for many years, and a member of both the Manitoba Club and Niakwa Country Club. Bill will be remembered and cherished for his brilliance of mind, generosity of spirit and sense of community. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 26 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Peters Church, Grant Avenue and Elm Street. The family wishes to express their thanks to the entire staff at T5 Deer Lodge Centre for the wonderful care Bill received in the last years of his life.
