Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNORMAN EDWARDS The family sadly advises that Norman passed on to his Heavenly Abode on October 24, 1999 at the Victoria General Hospital. He was born in Ulverstone, Lancashire, England on April 23, 1918, the only child of Gladys and Fred Edwards. His parents with him, he immigrated to Canada in 1919 and he has resided in Winnipeg from that time. He attended Cecil Rhodes School and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate before commencing work with Scott-Bathgate Ltd. in May, 1935 as office boy. He rose through various positions and eventually became Secretary Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors. For health reasons he resigned June 30, 1970. On January 2, 1971 he joined Western Homes Ltd./Curb Enterprises and associated companies and served them for 21 years, until his retirement. Norman was a good listener with much compassion and understanding, especially in business, when his office door was always open to anyone needing assistance. Norman is survived by Grace, his loving, devoted wife and best friend of 52 years; son Robert N. (Jane) and much loved grandson Steven of Los Angeles, CA; son Frederick W. (Kimberley) and much beloved grandsons, Michael and Eric of Calgary, AB. Norms pride and joy have always been his family. Also surviving are his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth (Bette) and Frederick Whiteside of Winnipeg, Winnifred and William Sim of Winnipeg; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, whom he was always justly proud and thankful. He has been an almost lifetime member of Sparling United Church, having been involved in Sunday School and Young Peoples, served as Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, on the Board of Stewards and Session of Elders. He served the Stewards board for 35 years, many of them as Secretary, and is the longest continuous serving Elder, having held that honour since 1942. Norman was a Life member of Ionic Masonic Lodge #25 G.R.M. and received his 50 year medal in 1996. He was also a member of all bodies of the Scottish Rite G.R.M. He was an avid reader and very loyal friend. He especially enjoyed sharing his accounting skills with anyone needing help. Norman was very fond of music and was always happy to give moral support and encouragement to relatives and friends in their efforts to pursue their talent towards a career in music. His appreciation of music gave him much enjoyment by being in the listening audience of the many concerts and performances that he and Grace attended. They were season ticket holders for the W.S.O. since 1956. One of his greatest joys of the outdoors was the many hours spent over the years at the family cottage at Lac Lu, Ontario. Norman courageously battled with severe arthritic pain throughout his entire adult life, plus severe chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. The family wishes to especially thank Dr. Sheila Domke for her care over many years, and other doctors to whom she has from time to time called upon for consultation. Funeral arrangements are in the care of Thomson Funeral Chapels, and a service of celebration for the life of our devoted husband, father and grandfather will be held in Sparling United Church, Elgin Ave. and Worth St. on Thursday, October 28 at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Harold Ritchie officiating. Following the service, a reception and fellowship will be held in the church hall and then burial in the family plot at Brookside Cemetery. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Sparling United Church, 1609 Elgin Ave., R3E 1C4, or Manitoba Lung Association, 629 McDermot Ave., R3H 1P6 or Arthritis Society of Manitoba, 105 - 386 Broadway, R3C 3R6. Active pallbearers are Michael Hart, Kenneth Hiebert, Gordon Parbery, Randal Peters, Tommy Petersen, Neil Sander.
