LLOYD V. McCORRISTER It is with deep sadness that the family of Lloyd V. McCorrister announces his death, on Friday, October 22, 1999 in Cochrane, Alta. Lloyd was born on September 14, 1923 in Portage la Prairie, the second youngest of nine children born to James and Jane McCorrister. He attended Victoria School in Portage until 1934 when the family moved to Winnipeg. Finding the work world more alluring, he left Daniel McIntyre High School after football season in Grade 11 and worked for Eatons for a short time before starting with the CPR. In 1941 he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served on several corvette escort ships in the Atlantic during the Second World War. Following his discharge he returned to Winnipeg and resumed his work with the CPR as a fireman, then as an engineer. He retired from the CPR in 1980 after nearly 40 years of service. Lloyd was a fun loving, quiet, gentle man who made many lasting friendships. He will always be remembered for his love of baseball, his dancing, his love of life, and his willingness to help out wherever he could. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion of the Portage Liniment League as a player and later player/coach and manager of the Sloans, of the Portage Masters Slow Pitch Team. He also enjoyed playing slow pitch baseball during their winters in Arizona. Lloyd suffered his first heart attack in 1961 and survived to share his love and enjoy life with his wife Gwen and children, Rick and Marlene. His resilience carried him through a third devastating attack to share his love with his son-in-law Mark and daughter-in-law Marilyn and his grandchildren, Michael (April Hammill) and Sean (Jessica Van de Kraats) Podwysocki and Kevin (Kirsten Earl), Andrew, Stuart and Robert McCorrister. We have all been truly blessed with this extra time and will deeply miss him being actively involved with our lives. Lloyd is also survived by his sisters, Olive Moyse and Eileen (Art) Diehl; his sister-in-law Margaret McCorrister and his brother-in-law Ralph (Brenda) Graham, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service will take place on Wednesday, October 27 at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity United Church in Portage la Prairie, Rev. Julie Baker officiating. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Portage la Prairie office, Catherin Newham, 103 Wilkinson Cres., Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 1A7 or to Trinity United Church, 15 Tupper St. S., Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 1W7.
