THOMAS O. COCHRANE

Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryTHOMAS O. COCHRANE Thomas O. Cochrane, peacefully, at Concordia General Hospital, October 27, 1999, at age 81. Tom was born in Melville, Saskatchewan, September 19, 1918. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in Toronto. He served through out the war as a sapper, receiving a wound in Belgium. He was married to Edith Stone in London, England on March 1, 1943. After the war, they moved to Winnipeg, where they operated Tommys Cafe on Main Street. He was subsequently employed for many years, first with the CNR, then with Canada Post, retiring as a letter carrier in 1983. During this time he was a strong union supporter. Tom was a keen card player (a member of a bridge club for a time) and enjoyed bowling for many years bowling with the Agotaras League. A popular reciter in his youth, he still loved to declaim the old narrative poems from memory. He learned wood workin in the Army and was proud to turn out and repair various things around the house. He followed the CFL and later the Toronto Blue Jays. His other enthusiams included Scottish music, dogs, horses, dancing and small children. He joined the Fort Garry Horse Militia and was with them until retirement, rising to the rank of Sergeant, in Stores. The regiment awarded him one of its Canadian Centennial Medals for his service to them. A long time worker for the NDP he and Edith were joint recipients of the Pioneer and the Lucille Ono Awards Toms family were always a great source of pride and pleasure to him. He is survived by his children, John, Carol and Kenneth; son-in-law Wayne Choma; daughter-in-law Linda Fletcher; grandchildren, Thomas and Patricia; brother Charles and his wife Pat; sister Florence Butler and her husband George; four nephews, three nieces, plus great nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 54 years, parents Matt and Nellie and sisters, Dora and Nan Cochrane. His ready grin, lively sense of mischief and fun, his obliging and outgoing nature made him popular with all he met and he will be missed as well by a host of friends and associates. The family wishes to thank the staff of Continuing Care and of Concordia General Hospital for their long care. Visitation will take place on Monday, November 1 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street. Funeral service will take place on Tuesday, November 2 at 2:00 p.m. also at Glen Eden Funeral Home. Interment Garden of the Old Rugged Cross, Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
