Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEFFIE JOHNSTON (nee DOWLER) Died peacefully in the Emerson Care Home, October 29, 1999 at the age of 96, widow of the late James Johnston (May 1999). She was predeceased by her son Jimmy in July 1994. She is survived by her daughters, Colleen Dansereau (Ray), Joy Batchelor (Blake) her daughter-in-law Helen Johnston; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Effie was born in Morris, Man., July 18, 1903 to Amos and Ettie Dowler, the eldest of seven children. She was predeceased by her parents, three brothers and one sister. She is survived by two sisters, Dot Kirby (Walter) of Winnipeg and Babe Bannatyne (Dave) of Estevan, Sask.; sister-in-law Iona Dowler of Victoria, B.C. and brother-in-law Lorne Johnston (Dorothy) of Emerson. Our Mom was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a very outgoing person, she enjoyed friends and family visiting their home. The door was always open and the kettle always on. She shared a very special relationship with each and every grandchild and was a special aunt to many nephews and nieces. Mom went to Normal School in Manitou, Man. She taught at Archibald School near Lariviere, at Lowe Farm, Man. and finally at Dufferin School at Aux Marias, Man. where she taught for seven years. It was while teaching at Dufferin School that Mom met our Dad. They were married in October 1933. Mom became a farmers wife and they began their journey together of over 65 years. Effie was a life member of the Canadian Red Cross and the Womens Institute. She taught sewing for the Emerson 4-H Club and was a member of the Baptist Church Womens Association. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Emerson Personal Care Home and the Home Care workers at Dufferin Courts for their care and kindness to our Mom. Special thanks to Helen for her love and devotion to Mom. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Emerson Baptist Church, Wednesday, November 3 at 2:00 p.m., Rev. Mark Funk officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Emerson Hospital Building Fund or a charity of your choice.
