Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJEAN LENORE CHAPPLE Jean Chapple (nee Fulford), formerly of Winnipeg, died on October 30, 1999 at her home in Minitonas, Manitoba. Widely known for her involvement in Manitobas musical life at both local and provincial levels, she will be missed. Thousands of people will remember singing in a music festival in a choir led by Mrs. Chapple! Born in Crystal City, on April 15, 1929, Jean spent her childhood in Mather and Minitonas. She earned her teaching certificate at Manitoba Normal School in 1947, where she met Lorne Chapple. Their shared love of music drew them together, and they married on August 10, 1950. They lived and taught in Portage la Prairie, Rathwell, and Virden. In Virden Lorne left teaching to become a journalist, but Jean continued to teach. She was always enthusiastically involved in her communitys musical life, taking school choirs to the festival, playing the organ for church, and, when her two children were small, teaching private piano lessons. In 1964, the family moved to Brandon, where Jean became a classroom music teacher. When the family moved to Winnipeg in 1967, she became an itinerant music specialist, teaching classes in several elementary schools each year. She held the position for 21 years. Meanwhile, she continued her own studies, earning her Bachelor of Arts in 1979, and completing her pre-Masters year in 1987. After retirement, Jean and Lorne moved to Minitonas. Jean played organ at her church, led the choir, and taught private piano lessons. She participated in many community activities, including bowling, bridge, lodge, and (of course!) the Swan Valley Music Festival. For several years she served at the provincial level on the board of the Associated Manitoba Arts Festivals, until illness forced her to resign. Jean will be fondly remembered for her cheerful and positive attitude, her gift of hospitality, her love of family, and her ability to encourage others to learn new things and rise to new challenges. She leaves behind her husband Lorne; son Keith Chapple of Minitonas; daughter Elisabeth Archambault (Betty Jean) son-in-law Marcel Archambault; and grandsons, Paul Archambault (Christie), Raymond Archambault, and Alfred Archambault, all of Brandon. Jean was predeceased by her parents, Christena (Tena) and Alfred (Doc) Fulford; sister Freda Harland; and brother Hugh Fulford. Left to mourn are brothers, Ivan (Bernice) Fulford, Dal (Mae) Fulford, Keith (Alfreda) Fulford, and Jim Fulford; sisters Alda Morrison and Norma Hanley; sister-in-law Marie Lung, brother-in-law Andrew Mackay, and their extended families. Rev. Kathy Highmoor officiated at the funeral, held November 2 at Knox United Church in Minitonas. Interment was in Minitonas Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Swan Valley Funeral Services. In tribute to Jean, friends are encouraged to support their local arts festivals. As well, a provincial festival scholarship for advanced piano students is being established.
