Basil also has 24 years of service with the Canadian National Railway, Transcona Shops. He was a strong man with an equally strong work ethic. He would often tell stories of how he would work all day at the CNR shops, then come home and work on his farm till after dark, then work on building his home until the wee hours of the morning, only to get up the following morning and to it all again. He took pride in the fact that he built his homes with his own hands. He had a strong sense of family responsibility combined with an immense pride in his Ukrainian Heritage and culture. He instilled this pride in his children through the use of his language and the practice of Ukrainian traditions during all family gatherings. Basil enjoyed dancing on Saturday afternoons at the legion, Club 141 and Sir Sam Steele and shopping at Eatons downtown and at the Shops on Selkirk Avenue and Main Street.
