DR. HARRY LANDER It is with a profound sense of loss that we announce the peaceful passing of Dr. Harry Lander on October 30, 1999, with his family by his side. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Deanne, his brother, Yechiael (Rose), his children, Mark (Sheila), Terry and Debra (Victor Stone), and his grandchildren, Matthew, Danielle, and Stephen, and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sybil and Bernie Lerner, as well as by numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Morris and Elizabeth Lander, his brothers, Jack and Sol, and his sister Sarah Dixon. Harry was born in Winnipeg in 1916, the fourth of five children. He received his B.Sc. in 1939 and his M.D. in 1942 from the University of Manitoba. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Army and served overseas as a Captain in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps from 1943 to 1946. Upon his return, he practised in Erickson, Manitoba, for one year before returning to Winnipeg where he was in family practice for 53 years. He was skilled in the art and science of medicine, and treated several generations of Winnipeg families. As he had done throughout his career, he kept himself up-to-date with the latest developments in medicine even after his retirement in 1995. His thirst for knowledge extended beyond medicine to the world at large and included the arts and sciences, history, current events and travel (especially his trips to Israel). Harry enjoyed the beauty of nature. He generously gave of his time to various community organizations. Tradition and his involvement with the Rosh Pina Synagogue were very important to Harry. Harrys family was the central focus of his life, and he was dearly loved by them. He inspired his children to be educated, responsible and loving with a deep sense of family and tradition. He will be remembered for his patience and his unfailing devotion to those he loved as well as to those in need, and for his quiet, gentle ways. Funeral services were held at Rosh Pina Synagogue on November 2, with Rabbi Neal Rose and Cantor Arky Berkal officiating. The eulogy was delivered by Harrys brother, Rabbi Yechiael Lander, followed by moving words compiled by Harrys wife, Deanne, which were read by his grandson, Matthew. Pallbearers were Sheila Lander, Matthew Lander, Victor Stone, Brian Lerner, David Kroft, and Dr. Harvey Max Chochinov. Honorary pallbearers were Bernie Lerner and Jack Dudeck. The family gratefully acknowledges the kindness and compassion shown by the staff of the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Unit. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Harry and Deanne Lander Trust Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, the St. Boniface Hospital Research Foundation, or to the charity of your choice. Harry will be deeply missed by all those whose lives he touched. He will be remembered as a man of unfailing integrity.
