Peacefully on November 8, 1999 at 8:30 a.m. at Seven Oaks Hospital, Sr. Joanna Brzoza, O.S.B. passed to her eternal rest. Sr. Joanna was born on January 22, 1901 in Beausejour, Man. to Sophie (Skora) and John Brzoza. She was the youngest of three children. Sr. Joanna entered the Benedictine Monastic Community in Winnipeg and made her monastic profession on February 11, 1918 at St. Benedicts Convent, 317 Pritchard Avenue. She joyfully served her community and the community at large mainly in prayer and domestic work. Sr. Joanna lost her hearing in 1918 due to the great influenza but she never lost her cheerfulness nor her willingness to be of service. She will always be remembered for her gentleness, her smiling face, her love of reading, and love of music albeit through feeling the rhythm through her fingertips. Her greatest joys were her prayer life and interacting with visitors. She was renowned for her baking especially at St. Pauls College and High School on Ellice Avenue, where she served for 27 years. She also ministered in Brandon, Camperville, Arborg, and St. Benedicts Monastery in Winnipeg. Sr. Joanna was predeceased by her parents, her brother Joe and her sister Mary. She is survived by her relatives, niece, Angela Luchowski, grand nieces Audry Wazny and Janet Paseshnik, grand nephew Edward Polkowski and the members of her Religious Community. A Vigil Service will be held on Wednesday, November 10 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Benedicts Monastery, presided by the Prioress, Sr. Virginia Evard, O.S.B. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, November 11, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Benedicts Monastery. Presider will be Rev. Msgr. L. McCloskey. Burial will follow in the Monastery Cemetery. The Sisters would like to give special thanks to Dr. A. Kuffel who provided Sr. Joanna with exceptional care in her declining years. Thanks are extended also to the staff at St. Benedicts Health Care Centre and Seven Oaks Hospital. Flowers are gratefully declined.
