WALTER CLIFTON MCDONALD It is with sadness in our hearts that we announce the death of Walter Clifton McDonald of Roland, MB on Sunday, November 7, 1999. Walter was predeceased by his beloved wife Jean McKay in 1978 after 48 years of happy marriage. He was also predeceased by his brother John R. McDonald in 1979; by his sister Jeanette G. Rogers in 1985; by his twin son Bruce C. McDonald and daughter-in-law Eleanor J. Banbury in 1991 and by grandson Neil B. Harper in 1996. He is survived by four children, Mildred A. Harper and her husband Bud of Regina, John A. McDonald and his wife Maryalyce of Vancouver, Isobel A. Robertson and her husband Al of Brandon, twin son Barrie C. McDonald and his wife Peggy of Ladysmith, BC, and 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Walter was born in Roland on March 16, 1903, the eldest son of John Albert McDonald and Alice Grace Carr. In 1913 he was one of the charter members of the Roland Boys and Girls Club, the first club of the organization subsequently known as the 4-H Clubs of Canada. He attended Wesley College, Winnipeg and graduated with a B.A degree in 1925. After graduation, he was employed with the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Manitoba and Ontario. In 1927, he returned to Roland and took over the insurance business of his father, who at the time was in failing health. It was a business Walter continued to operate until his retirement in 1986. During his lifetime Walter served his community in many capacities. He was a faithful member of Roland United Church, having taught Sunday School Class of teen-aged boys for many years and having served on numerous boards and committees. For 25 years he was a trustee of the Roland School District. He also served for 4 years on the Board of Regents of United College, now the University of Winnipeg. Walter was elected to the Manitoba Legislature in 1949 and served as an M.L.A. for 10 years. Walter was a devoted member of Freemasonry. He joined the Masonic Lodge in Fort Frances, ON in 1927 and in 1929 he affiliated with Shiloh Lodge #70 in Roland. He was elected Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Manitoba in 1948. In 1945 he became a member of Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Winnipeg Valley. He was elected a thirty-three degree Mason in 1955 and in 1976 was elected to serve for a 3 year period as Sovereign Grand Commander of Supreme Council of A. & A.S.R. of Canada. He was a charter member of the Royal Order of Scotland, Manitoba Chapter and served as its first Provincial Grand Master, a position he held for 10 consecutive years. He received the Legion of Honour degree of the order of DeMolay in 1971 in recognition of his contribution to Freemasonry. A memorial service will be held in Roland United Church on Saturday, November 13 at 2:00 p.m. with Chuck Ross officiating. Flowers gratefully declined. Friends if they wish, may make a memorial contribution to a charity of their choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Doyles Funeral Chapel, Carman, MB.
