Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCLARA KITTNER (nee SOLOMON) Clara Kittner, age 92, of the Sharon Home, Winnipeg, died suddenly at Seven Oaks General Hospital on November 12, 1999. Born on August 8, 1907 in Barlad, Romania, Clara was eight when her mother died. As the eldest daughter, she assumed the role of mother of seven siblings and ever afterward was known as the matriarch of the Solomon family. Clara and Leon Kittner were married in 1933 in Bucharest, where they lived until moving in 1951 with son Fred to pioneer in Naharia, then Haifa, Israel. They came to Canada to join family in 1960, living briefly in Calgary before settling in Winnipeg later that year. Undaunted by the hardships of early losses, separation from family due to war and political unrest, and emigration to new countries, Clara remained a positive person whose primary joy in life was her entire extended family. They looked to her for advice and tender comfort. Possessed of an irrepressibly strong work ethic, a gentle soul and a generous good nature, Clara exuded great personal warmth. She thought nothing of inconveniencing herself to help or provide hospitality to relatives or friends. Unfailingly, she preferred to see the good in others. Clara was a superlative cook and enjoyed needlepoint and embroidery. She moved to the Sharon Home in 1989, where she spent her declining years. The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Sharon Home and Dr. David Pearlman for their consistently professional care. Thank you as well to the staff of Ward U4 at Seven Oaks for their care of Clara in her last few hours. Remembering with love are son Serge and daughter-in-law Vivy Kittner; daughters-in-law, Sylvia and Charlotte Kittner and grandsons, Brad and Mark Kittner, all of Winnipeg. Clara is also survived by brothers, Frank (Getta) and Arthur (Mioara) of Winnipeg, Marcel (Lotti) of Calgary; sister Natalie of Israel and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Clara was predeceased in 1964 by Leon, her husband of 31 years; beloved sons, Fred (1996) and Misu (1991) her parents; brothers, Carl and Misu of Winnipeg and mostly recently, by sister Lisa Moscovitch of Winnipeg. Funeral will take place at Bnay Abraham Synagogue, 235 Enniskillen, Sunday, November 14 at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Bnay Abraham Cemetery.

What a wonderful grandmother. I miss her everyday. Nothing was to great for her to do for me or most anyone she knew. Clara well played the part of a true lady. She instantly became a socialite when married to my grandfather Leon in Bucharest until after WWII. She would cook anything I liked and do what she could to please me. Also, her food was beyond tasty. her soups and stews were legendary. For a few years my dad had a restaurant, she came twice a week to cook and on those days the line ups to get in were common. She was the quintessential matriarch in her family and the extension reached to close family friends who also endearingly called her "MAMA". Love exuded from her and her love for her family was apparent. One thing was for sure, she always commanded respect and it was well deserved. Miss you lots.
